Top 10 A24 Movies | A CineFix Movie List

If there’s a logo we love seeing in front of a movie more than most, it’s those three, vintage font, RGB animated characters A24. More often than not seeing that logo means you’re in for a treat. Just what kind of treatment is anyone’s guess, but horror, sci-fi, fantasy, coming of age, and every genre in between, A24 strives for a distinct vibe and an interesting voice, which is why they deserve their own Movie List. So here are our picks for the 10 best A24 films.

Whatever genre they dabble in, the distributor turned production company puts its unmistakable mark on their films. They do science fiction films with big ideas and small budgets like Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell in The Lobster, or Robert Pattinson and a baby hurtling toward a black hole in High Life. They do every flavor of horror imaginable, from Ti West and his survival horror X to supernatural Giallo throwbacks like In Fabric and existential dread fests like A Ghost Story from David Lowery or The Blackcoat’s Daughter. And big-name stars do some of their best work in independent films like Ryan Reynolds in Mississippi Grind, Ethan Hawke in First Reformed, Nicole Kidman in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, or Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse.

The point here is, that A24 has an incredible batting average when it comes to tastemaking indie cinema and they’ve only been around for 10 years.

This Movie List was written by Matt Fowler and edited by Kalani Newman.

  1. I loved all these films, but I definitely think Minari (2020) kept us all sane during the pandemic, and was a fantastic narrative debut by Lee Isaac Chung. It also got Steven Yuen is first Oscar nomination, and Youn Yuh-jung her first Oscar. Also, that score is still to this day one of my absolute favorites. I feel like despite its success this one isn’t as discussed.

  2. That VVitch synopsis was insane, definitely never heard someone interpret it that way, considering she was the least victimized of all the characters, the only survivor, yet somehow the victim, and the hero? Is her family supposed to represent society, trying to hold her back from self-actualization or something? Her desire to become an evil witch must not be impeded? Sure, her mom was mad she sacrificed her baby brother (to herself?) ..if it was really another witch that kidnapped and ate the baby, how are we supposed to yell, 'Yass Queen' when her entire family is dead and she ends up joining the evil coven? That's the Girl Power message you think that film has? I feel like i have to spoil the ending to give context just how absurd, at least in the convoluted way that 'message' was relayed.. at least, reducing the film itself is a metaphor about how men hates all women (unless youre saying women hate and oppress women too), that only leaves really the other half of the population, right? Just stating that society (men) hates women, yet men built civilization so our familys would be the safest and most comfortable possible.. 99% of men the greatest protectors and supporters of women.. in the VVitch, society banished the entire family for religious reasons, it wasnt men targeting women because theyre afraid of their cycle.. lmao, that is ridiculous.. even back in that time, there wasnt mass hysteria about witches.. in Salem, they executed 20 out of 200 tried peoples, and not just women.. smdh.. where's the condemnation for the relgious lunatics? No, no, its just "society", men dont like women, thats why those men executed men in Salem.. so dumb.

This wasn’t the first A24 film I watched but it was one of the first when I remembered thinking wow this studio is behind so many original great movies! Always watching out for new releases behind this studio!
