Too difficult tracks with Klaus in Laos: RTW Ep

Yes, this one got a *bit* more tricky than we’d have liked. Before you worry, Liss had a great time, and was the main drive behind pushing further on. Well, on the second track. On the first the decision to keep going was all Harry’s.

Sadly, this track spells the end of our offroad exploits for a while. The damage to Tatanka has Liss worried we’ll break the bike beyond repair; so from here for the next little while, it’s sealed roads… Or at least well-established ones. Which I know some of you will welcome, as you lovely people worry that I’m leading her to her doom!

For me (Harry) this was one of my favourite days of riding in a long time. Challenging, interesting, we got to see some beautiful countryside and meet some helpful Laos locals (all of whom I gave some money for helping us out). Liss says it was a great day, but was just sad to break her mirrors (and clutch and bend her GPS mount and smash her windscreen).

You can choose to support us here by showing our videos to people who you think might like them. We also have a Patreon www.patreon.com/ridingoneggshells and YouTube will let you β€˜Thank!’ me if you want to. Patrons get perks, early videos, and now-time updates (where you’re seeing about 2 weeks in the past usually). They also get exclusive content, and can request videos (like Peter and Karin who wanted to know how I’d made my helmet (GoPro and bluetooth y’know).

The builds:
Two DR650’s roughly 2014

Laila: Harry’s Black Bike
DR650 2012 (I think) with many mods
Lynx fairing by Britannia Composites. Great product.
Safari 37 litre tank

Mosko Moto Backcountry 35 panniers with quick release backing. Also, AWESOME. No rattle, seconds on and off, easy to find the place to put it.

Pelican Top Case with Caribou mounting system. Unsure on this one. It bounces, as it only has two forward points of contact, so I’ve installed a thong dampener so it doesn’t bang any more. While it has locks, it also has standard bolt heads accessible, and I reckon I could rip it off forcibly but I won’t try.

Tyres Australia D606 rear, Tractionator Dualventure DV tyres front. D606 is great, Tractionator not.

Montana 700i with satellite tracking beacon and SOS and messaging, can share location with home and call for help in remote places

Airbox and carbs modded
Teknik suspension, highly rate it
Safari Seat – all these seats hurt I can’t pick them apart
BnB Bash Plate
Risers
Doubletake adventure mirrors

Tatanka: Liss Eggy Bike
Lots the same
DR650 2014 with mods:
Safari 37-litre tank
JNS LED headlight
Yolk-tinted windshield
Doubletake adventure mirrors
Andystrapz panniers (they do the job and nothing more)
Yellow second-hand pelican case, bolted ingeniously to the bike with buttonheads underneath so only removable by opening the box and removing the camera and reaching through the foam. Works rather well, if I do say so myself.

Liss’ bike has been lowered in the rear, but she doesn’t want to lower the front.

  1. if you ride your bike on a good flat road at sub 5kph it gets pretty hard to balance.
it's even harder to ride on difficult terrain at slow speed. you need to up your confidence in keeping a steady speed everywhere or you'll be perpetually stuck in a scared to go faster, stack all the time from going too slow scenario. yes easier said then done but working on that might help other pieces of the puzzle fit together. also its usually more energy and time efficient to go back down to flat ground and have another go than push a bike uphill.

  2. I very much enjoy all of your videos, I like that you show the rough with the smooth, you don't do what a lot of channels do and make things always look peachy, intentional and enjoyable. This is honest travelling.
You are quite the risk taker Harry… it def makes for some very adventurous adventures… I imagine it must be quite difficult to keep your chins up when it all gets tough, so very awesome how helpful the locals are… and I too laughed at the top the lass was wearing πŸ˜€

  3. Oh my wordy lordy kids…this was by far the most gut in mouth episode ever. I felt like I was going to throw up several times. Hats off to you both for getting through that. Chalk that up to one hell of an experience. πŸ˜€πŸ™πŸ˜€

  4. Wow. That was epic. Harry I would have been disappointed if you didn't get stuck in the mud somewhere and Lis I'm glad your ok after stacking your bike a couple of times. Look forward to the next video and try and stay safe.

  5. Great to see Klaus made the title 😜. Honestly keep going and enjoying things, these "bad decisions" are what will make for great memories and tales you can look back on. As long as you both feel comfortable and have a smile on your faces keep doing what you do.

  7. Man, you pair, that was grueling! But hey, I'd rather have a bad day on the tracks than a good day in the office any day. Superb riding both of you. Glad Liss wasn't hurt in that fall πŸ’ͺπŸ‘
