If there was any character that was at the forefront of the fifth generation, I wouldn’t doubt that some would say, Laura Croft. A character that encompassed the badass adventuress fantasy and delivered games that were received and sold well. It was unfortunate then that due to being overworked through releasing a game every year from 1996 to 1999 that we received one of our final major Tomb Raider releases, Angel of Darkness, which was received so poorly that the entire series was put on hold. Laura’s initial run was headed by Core Design who showed a sentiment of wanting to move on from the character and so Eidos Entertainment shifted Crystal Dynamics in place to pick up the pieces, which they successfully did, releasing a few new titles and remakes along the way. In 2009, Eidos was acquired by Square Enix and had a team working on yet another reboot of the series, this time focusing on a more grounded and gritty Laura Croft, and how she became a Tomb Raider. This new trilogy titled the ā€œsurvivor trilogyā€ was met with critical acclaim, at least, for the first entry.

Something interesting to note about Laura Croft’s time out of the spotlight during the 7th generation is how a seemingly spiritual successor took its place, and gamers noted this as this particular title would be given the fan title of ā€œdude raiderā€. Now let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here. I’m not saying Uncharted is some Tomb Raider rip off and I highly doubt anyone would suggest that but I think it’s important to note how significantly Uncharted and Nathan Drake not only influenced games in the 7th generation but became the new face of the action-adventure genre. So even though Uncharted didn’t borrow too heavily from the original tomb raider games, Tomb Raider 2013, certainly borrowed from Uncharted. If Laura Croft was going to reclaim her throne atop the adventure genre, then she’d have to reinvent herself, and she had one key advantage over Nathan Drake. Uncharted 1, 2, and 3 were all released to critical acclaim and the flaws with the series were clear. Tomb Raider had a perfect opportunity to learn from Uncharted’s mistakes, while also reimagining its successes. This is what makes Tomb Raider so interesting to me and that’s why throughout this video I’ll be looking at the game through this lens. Tomb Raider was dethroned by Uncharted and was now back with something to prove, and its confidence was part of how successful it was at surpassing Uncharted in some ways. There were many points where it felt that Tomb Raider was painfully and humorously aware of its competition and inspirations, which is why I felt it necessary to look back on the trilogy, starting with this entry.

No series in the adventure genre is as iconic as Tomb Raider. Within this Tomb Raider Critique and Tomb Raider Analysis, I analyze the reboot that followed a long run of Tomb Raider games, in this adequately titled, Tomb Raider 9 Years Later. This Tomb Raider Review while mentioning the previous games, will focus solely on the Tomb Raider Reboot. With a New Tomb Raider around the corner, there is no better time to do a Tomb Raider 2013 critique, and needless to say Tomb Raider 2013 holds up 9 years later. This Tomb Raider 2013 Analysis, the first part of my Tomb Raider Retrospective, will consist of all 3 games in the Tomb Raider Reboot Retrospective. This is A Critique of Tomb Raider and the Tomb Raider DLC but this isn’t a Tomb Raider Walkthrough or a comprehensive History of Tomb Raider. This video will be a pseudo Tomb Raider vs Uncharted video with accompanying tomb raider gameplay, that discusses both Uncharted and Tomb Raider Years Later. Created by That Boy Aqua

  1. The modern Tomb Raider trilogy is, no joke, some of my favorite games to come out in the last 20 years. I just love them. Do they have faults? Sure. But as far as moment to moment enjoyment, these games were just amazing.

  2. i am a massive fan of the survival trilogy, i've played through all three games twice (with increased difficulty during my second run) and it's just an absolute delight to go through tombs and collect artifacts and caches. it's just fun and it tickles that adventurer part of of my brain that wants to explore and find secrets.

  3. Never played it, yet have had it a long time.
This is my second ever watched video about it.
Are these actions infuriating? Why should I play it if anyone wants to rant on why, I also know next to nothing about this game.

Games anymore just suck so I've been exploring that golden era of single player games.

  4. Uncharted is fine, but beyond its witty characters, cinematic set-pieces, and presentation, it offers a much more shallow gameplay experience than any of the Tomb Raider games.

  5. Came here from your "Rise" video and honestly, thank you for correcting your pronunciation of her name šŸ˜‚ I loved this game, thought it was a brilliant reboot with a story that struck a good balance between her roots and something new. Rise was definitely the best. The other game shall not be named šŸ˜‚

  6. This needs a higher texture pack and bring it up-to-date like how they did with the last of us new remaster that's coming to pc soon and sort out the bugs and gun play along with rise as well

  7. You are very quickly becoming my favorite game reviewer. You, Whitelight, and now TotallyPointlessTV with his new reviews are all excellent. Can't wait for the Shadow of the Tomb Raider vid.

  8. I started playing. I am about half the game and so far this woman already broke every single bone on her body and probably commited a small genocide in that island (judging by numbers, she might the single most mass murderer in history)… thats video game realism for you 🤣

  9. This is my go to video game to play after I’ve felt exhausted on a franchise I’ve played and finished.
It’s a breezy two days play and it always felt rewarding to me. That’s a bold mark for a game for me

  10. I think the reason why the bow is so much more accurate than the rifle, is because she’s not very experienced with firearms. After all she is British, and I know this may be stereotyping a little bit, but most people in The UK are not nearly as experience with firearms as Americans especially with handguns as handguns are completely banned in the UK but rifles and shotguns well technically legal are real pain to get.

  11. I think a comparison with Naughty Dogs other game is also quite fitting, both Tomb Raider & TLOU were 2013 releases for PS3. They both had PS4 remasters in 2014. The darker tone was more comparable to TLOU than Uncharted too. However I do think Tomb Raider was less buggy and had better quality of life improvements but your mileage may vary. Re-playing Tomb Raider now, i absolutely don’t think it needs a remake and looks great even now, I’m not sure what that says about Sony’s ā€œneedā€ to remake TLOU and charge $70.

  12. I played this whole trilogy, but waited until just a few weeks ago to start shadow… and honestly shadow of the tomb raider is really great! But I think there’s one thing that makes it my favorite-replay value. Thanks to the main city hub, and the incentive with new game+ AND different unlockable abilities depending on your starting path.

The game is also quite huge. I accidentally found one challenge dlc tomb (I got the definitive edition since it’s so cheap now) and I have yet to find any other of the tombs… despite playing the game almost twice now. Its a gorgeous game as well.

I recall thoroughly enjoying the first two games quite a bit, I definitely replayed the first and second game through more than once, but there’s certainly something about shadow of the tomb raiders environments that I find utterly charming.

  13. Tomb raider 2013 REALLY should've been survival horror. With Laras abilities feeling more impactful as the game continues, and Ramos up from being more survival horror to action. Which in some cases it's kinda true, Lara does feel more capable as u get more skills bit maybe there potential for it to feel even more significant.
29:19 Damn that's a cool point which I never thought about Lara avoiding help because she doesn't want her friends to see how ruthless she's become one with killing, how she enjoys going from prey to predator, from feeling hunted to in control.
