Tom & Jerry | A Spanish Twist | Cartoon | John Foster | George Stallings

Tom and Jerry find themselves adrift on a raft in the ocean. Eventually, they wash ashore in Spain and end up in a bull ring, facing off against numerous bulls.

1932 American Animated Short

Tom and Jerry are on a raft in the ocean. After being attacked by an octopus and losing their raft, they wash up on the shores of Spain. After harassing the waitresses at a local sidewalk café, they insult the owner and wind up in a bull ring as punishment. In the midst of fighting dozens of bulls, they receive a telegram that Prohibition has been repealed back in the U.S. They immediately leave Spain headed back to the U.S. for a drink.

Tom and Jerry were two characters who starred in a series of animated shorts produced by Van Beuren Studios. The series ran from 1931 to 1933. When Official Films purchased the Van Beuren works in the 1950s, the characters’ names were changed to Dick and Larry to avoid confusion with the cat and mouse of the same name. Today, animation historians refer to them as Van Beuren’s Tom and Jerry. The characters were similar to Mutt and Jeff, one short (Jerry) and the other tall (Tom). Each cartoon featured a new adventure and the plot varied each time. Sometimes they were lawyers, hunters, plumbers, hobos, and so on. The Tom and Jerry adventures were generally absurdist comedies, containing twisted images and some (minor) sexual references. Joseph Barbera began his career as an animator and screenwriter for this series. In 1940, Barbera created another duo with the same names: a cat and mouse named Tom and Jerry.
