In today’s video we go over another Titled Tuesday in which case I plan on playing nothing but the Hippopotamus Defense! This Titled Tuesday I played against 6 FMs, 2 IMs, 1 CM, 1 WGM, and 1 GM. I ended up with a score of 6 out of 11, and in this video I look to share my most interesting win and most interesting loss. Titled Tuesday has commonly featured some of the world’s top players including Hikaru Nakamura, Magnus Carlsen, Daniel Narodistky, Sam Shankland, and many more! I did not play any of these GMs, but I did play against GM Jeffery Xiong, who is rated nearly 3100 on @chess!

My belief is that it is not just important to go over the greatest GM games. Now sure, I have learned a lot by studying games from Garry Kasparov, Magnus Carlsen, Mikhail Tal, Paul Morphy, Viswanathan Anand, Anatoly Karpov, Josh Waitzkin, Vladimir Kramnik, and many more. They show off amazing chess strategy, chess ideas, chess moves, chess principles, and chess theory!

But it is also good to not only know WHAT to do, but WHAT NOT to do! This is why I include losses on my channel. Firstly, I know chess YouTubers have a stereotype (and rightly so because it’s true) of only posting their wins. I don’t want to fit that category. More importantly, however, it is helpful for YouTube subscribers to see what chess mistakes/chess inaccuracies/chess blunders should be avoided! As a chess player, I don’t just look for the good moves, but also the bad ones. Knowing moves that will be bad in the long run is a great way to avoid doing them!

I hope you enjoy these games, one of them a Hippopotamus Defense, with the other transposing into a King’s Indian Attack. The Hippo chess opening cannot always be played, and I talk about why in both this video and the course. But often, our position is more than okay if we need to take a different route! I will leave a link to my Hippopotamus Defense chess course below! I used it to earn both the CM and NM (USCF) titles, and am excited for its potential to help you improve as a chess player!

  1. Wheeze honk all! Hippo Army let's rally together for a full stream of Solomon playing titled Tuesday. I would love to watch thoughts and reactions as they occurred. And who doesn't wanna watch 2 hours of the Giant playing the Hippo?

  2. For anyone that is interested, I would highly recommend his Hippo course. I was quite impressed with how many positions and games he covers. He also lists dozens of pgn’s where some of the best players in the world utilize the hippo.

    Cheers 🍻

  4. Many thanks for another instructive Hippo video, Solomon!
Indeed, opponents will often have to bend over backwards just to prevent the full Hippo setup, but there will be consequences for doing so!

  5. Of course,we don't recommended always hippo setup. If we play first g3,white can play for many ideas.Example.Engine recommendation is.1.g3-e52..c4!-or1.g3-d52.Sf3.Of course if we want hippo setup, then we allow d5 and e5 for black.Engine dont like allow black 2 central pawns. But engine like space.Hyppo is fan,and interesting in many opening.
