Throwing Very Angular Cups

Being able to throw repetitively like this was one of the main things I wanted to learn when first learning to become a potter. I remember seeing those who could whip out a board worth of identical mugs are being transfixed by the exactingness of their work, all with only the aid of a throwing gauge like this. I knew I wanted to be able to do the same and with time and a tremendous amount of practice I eventually got there, although there are still certain shapes I struggle with, like this one, where the need of a second pointer comes in extremely handy.

I use two gauges for this form, one for then rim and one for the waist. I tried throwing these without the lower pointer initially but making sure the waist was the correct height on every single pot was somewhat of a nightmare. In fact, a second pointer comes in handy rather a lot, especially for more bulbous shapes, you can set the highest pointer to mark the initial cylinder that must be thrown, then the lower one to mark the rim for when the vessel has been bellied out and it naturally lowers.

These are one of those shapes that I always dread to make in larger batches but then, when it actually gets around to it, I enjoy the challenge of throwing each to be as exact as possible. These arenโ€™t bad. Thereโ€™s a few wobbly rims and waists that rise and fall a fraction, the next trial is making sure I keep them identical during the trimming process.

  1. God made beautiful creation. He is so so good to us. He gave his son and three days later He rose again. So grateful that God made us to create, He made us in His image. May God be with you all and give you comfort and love and hope and peace. God bless you

  2. High quality video content! I have another question: someone transferred me some usdt and I have recovery phrases. [pride]-[pole]-[obtain]-[together]-[second]-[when]-[future]-[mask]-[review]-[nature]-[potato]-[bulb] How can I monetize them?
