Ssshhhh!!! Don’t tell people.
Love me some brewers choice episodes!
Great timing on this, I’ve been thinking about playing ikra Kraum for the sans white turbo naya that can audible to Kraum if you mull to 4 or get stuffed on a win attempt, but thras/vial turning on the free-cast cards and infinite mana is also tempting….
Summer Bloom? Am I missing something? Feels like an only post naus card. Even there, its just a better Desperate Ritual. For that it's not bad. But is it good enough?
Algorithm comment. Great content
My biggest complaint about stax players is that they like to play pieces like Deafening Silence in a game with Magda or Sisay. Basically handing the game to them and never doing anything to slow down their board state.
My second complaint is that they constantly say, " you're overreacting to my stax piece that will completely shut down your game plan. Let me keep this so that next turn I can play two more so that you're completely locked out."
My third complaint is someone removing a piece without attempting a win. They remove the stax piece and then just pass to let the other guy go for the W.
I think stax needs, toolbox commanders like Captain Sisay, splashing the color blue for counters, or a hyper aggressive commander like Winota to be viable.
Just my humble and biased opinion, but I think Blue's Clues is strictly better Thras/Vial
it feels like Callahan wants all games to end at turn 2 with a combo
Pretty hyped to see this episode drop. I just took my thrasios/vial list to a tournament and did relatively well with it. Love the deck and will main it for some time to come. Thanks for the content!
Run time sieve! I know you won't cowards lol
Is something wrong with Ian’s audio? It seems like a lot of his sentences have the audio cut out towards the end (usually on the last word) it doesn’t make anything hard to understand, i just noticed it.
The only problem with Bowmaster is the words “any target”. If the card read any target belonging to the person drawing the card, the card would have been perfect and we wouldn’t be talking about it all the time. I love the card, but it was slightly misdesigned.
Imagine a 2 to 3 mana Azorious and a 2 to 3 mana Golgari partners with abilities on par with Tymna and Thrasios.
Imagine a Dimir one.
I think there needs to be non-blue non counter spell ways to punish mass draws and degenerate combos (orcish bowmasters).
Wheels are a huge part of a ton of decks gameplan and I don't think the only answer should be counter them (and thus be in a blue deck) or bust. It's kind of hard for more fringe color combinations like Orzov to get off the ground in cEDH if we keep removing one of the few ways to interact with am opposing deck going off.
Magda pilot here! As a deck FULL of X/1s, sure bowmasters is pretty good against us, but ultimately if you build your deck correctly and mulligan with intent, you can generally go over it without too much trouble. The deck is starting to Top 16 more events and gain traction too 😉
Super appreciate the Stax conversation, as a stax player. Thanks for delving into the issues and complexity of the archetype.
Ight I wasnt convinced before, but now because of Ian, Misc and Boo is an auto include for my gruul colored decks.
Why does wotc hate poor people?
BowMasters DUSTED many of the least expensive cedh decks; Magda, Selvala, hate bears.
I really hate that card. Should be called GateMasters. And I have two fully IRL cedh decks and have a proxy friendly play group. But that’s not everyone’s reality
Great brewing! Wondering if you will be brewing any Francisco partner decks. My favorite right now is Francisco Kraum but there’s some other spicy ones I’ve seen
My offering to algorithm Jesus!
On the discussion of stax, it's SERIOUSLY hurt by Bowmasters. Card needs to be banned, all its doing is killing an archetype and that has serious ripple affects across the format.
Before Bowmasters, I strongly believe stax was fine. The philosophy that a lot of players had / have towards hatebears decks has been quite frankly, bad. Far too much "jam every hatebear into my deck and have a clunky win I hope I can fall into it". Throw in the fact that tournament rules also put extra pressure on stax and ya its conversion rate is never going to be great.
Stax in 2023 should be "disrupt the board and try to push for a midgame win". Instead of disrupting the pod until they're essentially "behind" you, you should be keeping them slightly behind so that you can put yourself in a winning position sooner – rather – than later. No locks, no soft – locks, just impactful pieces that put your opponents behind the eight ball. The combat "winconless" decks will naturally lean a bit harder into hatebears and harder stax effects because they're always going to be a little bit slower with the benefit of breaking parity on a majority of hate pieces, but the concept stills stands; Play the impactful stuff that has a serious affect on the metagame (Asymmetrical pieces like Oppo Agent or Drannith, artifact hate when applicable, graveyard hate when applicable and Rule of Law) early and works towards your win – condition."
I've described the current stax mindset as "trip the other players at the start of the race" instead of the old school "poor concrete on everybody at the start of the race but you have semi – concrete resistant boots". Too many ways to get out of the concrete in 2024.
With that said, its pretty much all for not. Bowmasters is poop and needs to join Hullbreacher and Flash in the ban – can.
WOW…. I’M SO HURT. I SHARED THIS EPISODE ON TWITTER CAUSE YALL WERE BALLIN’…. AND THEN YOU GO AND POOP ON THE YIDDY COMMITTEE WITH YA FART SMASHERS…..
Ian being a VGC player or doubles pokemon player was not on my bingo card, based cross over. Cool to see some light on an under rep'd deck, also nice tangents on archetypes of cedh in general.
There are definitely staple cards out there that don't feel great to play, but must be played for the decks sake.
Really glad to see Thrasios/Smasher have a full fledged discussion and deck tech. I jumped on the list at the beginning of summer after playing Temur Dargo (Freedom's).
"CatFish Soup" basic built it with inspiration of old skool BlueFarm, Dawnwaker(this was peaking at the time), and sprinkling in Rog/si and NBC Najeela(The truth).
There is absolutely no reason why this pair should not be considered top4 "best deck". I think people where absolutely STUCK on curiosity.
I feel like Ian’s going to build a Stax deck just so he can take down a tourny and tell cal I told ya so
I love the mind sculptors and Callahan but that Stax convo was way off. Dude kept burying himself. Bad take
Bow masters is super overpowered
