Thoma: he protecc, he attacc, and he make you a snacc! Genshin character review

Thoma is one of my favourite four stars in Genshin, and — just like Layla — he’s seriously underrated.

When talking about the story he’s often dismissed as a friendly but ultimately inconsequential sidekick, yet without his help, the Traveler would not have survived their first encounter with the Shogun.

In combat he gets pushed to the side due to his support role, and his badly misunderstood kit. Since the release of Dendro he at least gained some appreciation as a brilliant Burgeon trigger, but he has always been more valuable than people realised.

And yet, while I appreciate his actual strengths, his playstyle wasn’t quite what I had hoped for, and I’ve spent way too many hours trying to fit him into the role I really wanted…

Let’s talk about it!

  1. I recently finished building Thoma and I dont regret it! Hes very good for burgeon/burning teams. I recommend him for a Wriothesly melt burn comp where he can reapply pyro very well and protect Wrio from self affliceted burn dmg (yes attacking burned enemies hurt ur own character if u are too close to them…)

  2. I’ve been building my Thoma and I just got his C6 today. This video couldn’t have been timed better.

Also what teams are you planning on using him in. My plan was to swap between Clorinde overload and Nahida burgeon.

  3. my unbuilt thoma watching this in the corner, not even on my to build list atm: 😮‍💨

in all seriousness though, thank you for another amazing character review!! i appreciate all the time and dedication you put into these. i love these ones in particular because i can load em up and learn all i need to know in one helpful video!!! your attention to detail is so thorough and is genuinely appreciated!! i've always loved thoma's character but after watching this, it's probably time to add him to my build list 🧐once again, thank you for the extremely well done video and i cant wait to see what you come out with next!!! 😍

  4. My thoma is a hybrid between the two archetypes. He’s all HP mainstats with lots of ER substats w/ the Fontaine craftable weapon but his artifact set is the flower of paradise lost and he’s sitting on 200 EM from substats. I like this build because it fits all situations and it really highlights this specific team I like. It’s essentially a reverse-vape/burning/burngeon team with yelan/nahida/kazuha/thoma. The trick is to skill with nahida and thoma then burst with kazuha. This makes pyro swirls and burning reaction on enemies. Then when yelan comes in, her skill with have huge nukes from the reverse-vape, but with her normal attacks she can apply quick hydro and create cores which kazuha’s EM will normally proc the burngeon or sometimes thoma if you’re closer, but essentially I build thoma for hp so it’s mainly to build up stacks to protect from burngeons and apply pyro. I also use prototype amber on nahida to heal and give energy to team and proc the Fontaine spear. Looking forward to a future unit that will focus on burning reactions, perhaps my team can get an upgrade.

  5. I just recently built my Thoma to try out in an Abyss team, but having pulled Arle and Cholrinde I may tweak his build a bit. This video also really helped me think about his rotations and how to play him better. Thanks for all your amazing advice as always!!! ps Best title bye far

  6. I love Thoma ❤ It took me ages to build him as i got him on my first banner while I was still in Mondstadt (and it took me ages to get to inazuma 😅). I only wish he’d work with my Lyney so I could swap Zhongli for him. But my yoimiya loves him 😊

  7. I have my thoma triple 9 talents with r2 staff of homa. I really want to pull for more constellations but i hear clorinde is mid so i dont want to waste my pity. I build him as a sub dps/shielder with crit and hp stats.

  8. I really liked that you gave a nice, short summary of his kit, gave some insight into his strengths and weaknesses without either over- or underselling his worth. That's rare nowadays and I really appreciate that.

Still, I don't think he's great as of now – he has some niche cases (which is good – if these characters dominate that niche), but in general, he's only bringing a (very sturdy) shield and some pyro application. While that makes him great in teams that utilise Burning and Burgeon, both of these reactions are as of now quite weak.
That in itself shouldn't discourage anyone from playing him – remember: the Abyss does not give a lot of Primogems and it is by no means mandatory to do.

As to Burning… using Thoma, Nahida, Yao Yao and Sucrise proved to be quite fun, since the damage from Burning is soaked by Thoma's shield and Sucrose really wants to use Normal Attacks in this team

  9. My favorite Thoma team is actually with Nahida, Xingqiu, and Kuki.
Both Kuki and Thoma are built full EM, so it ends up being a hybrid burgeon/hyper bloom team. And electro can actually help extend dendro aura/prevent burning, which is why characters like Fischl can be the 4th slot for better ST damage.

It's probably overall still less efficient to have two EM triggers, but I've found the redundancy nice actually. Sometimes positioning means Thoma misses hitting a seed, but then Kuki will hit it or vice versa.
And it also makes the team flexible for elemental checks–i dont always have to use both of them, i can decide to just do 1 or the other as necessary.

And then XQ dmg reduction, Thoma shields, and Kuki heals make it incredibly comfortable.

  10. I’ve been a Thoma fan since I saw him in the archon quest. I also loved how beautiful his normal attack animations are. The biggest hurdle Thoma really had, which he has in common with other shielders, is the existence of Zhongli. Geo daddy is just too good at low investment that all other shielders look weak. Which I assume is why future shielders had to have something else to offer like effective off field elemental application (Thoma, Layla, Kirara) in order to make up what they may lack in shield strength. But despite that I wanted to make Thoma work, but due to lack of my experience and just knowledge of the game at the time, I couldn’t. 🥲 My boy was left gathering dust while I went and built my Ayaka, Xiao and Yelan. Fortunately dendro came along and definitely saved Thoma for me. To me, burgeon is great because even dumb players like me can easily build Thoma as a burgeon trigger. I always have him at the back of my mind now just in case I ever need to play burgeon or whenever I feel like playing him. I’m pretty satisfied with my burgeon build plus I get to play him on field so it’s mostly a win for me. ❤

  11. I managed to get Thoma to C6 on Clorinde's banner, which was great, because I was planning on using him in my Cloreuse Overload team, and he has been invaluable for protecting Clorinde as she overloads everything she shoots at, and thanks to Chevreuse (and a second electro), he is easily keeping his energy levels up.
I need to work on building his artifacts and talents, but he's already great in the team.

  12. even in lore he is underrated. recent events describe the puppy cooperation between the yashiro commission and watatsumi, and Thoma is the one doing all the coordination as a "fixer". that's the reason he was chose as 100th vision holder to get the vision taken.

  13. Thanks for this.

I just got Clorinde and Sethos, currently grinding out their friendship but starting to think about actual teams for them. Do you think C2 Chevreuse is enough to make an Overload comp work with Clorinde, Fischl, and Thoma?
