ℹ️ About the Episode:
When it comes to planning a big trip, it’s only natural to have all the details mapped out. For the first week of our big Italian “Empty Nesting” trip, we had each night planned months in advance. After all, we’re noobs when it comes to travel abroad! So when our bed & breakfast canceled the pre-paid reservation we’d made in January the night before… we couldn’t believe it.
As disappointed as we were, we knew Europe would be no different than any of our RV trips in the States. We knew in our gut that what we’d come up with instead would be equal to or better than our original plans—and we were right! This abrupt change of plans gave us the confidence to wing it. Not having expectations can often lead to being pleasantly surprised at the smallest outcomes rather than saying, “Hmm… I thought it would be more/less ________ ” (fill in the blank). We found a charming town we’d heard of while planning but had decided to skip. As it turned out, Alberobello, Italy, is exactly what we needed: a charming small town that wasn’t crawling with tourists, plus good food and a laid-back local vibe. We extended our stay to three nights and used our time to adjust to the time zone and enjoy each other’s company in this quiet town. Assisi, Italy, was also on our list of places to visit, but we would have only visited for a day trip. Now that we weren’t locked into our original plans, we could spend the night. Experiencing the town after all the tourists left was much like Mackinac Island—quiet and peaceful. We were also able to make dinner reservations at Le Terrazze di Properzio—a beautiful restaurant overlooking the town—and enjoy a magnificent sunset.

Tricia, I am not squimish when driving, but even I was watching with my eyes closed!!! Marc, you're CRAZY! I would have just left the car there…
Such a great episode! We love following along. Trish, your crossbody purse is beyond cute! Can you please share the brand? Thanks! ❤
Wonderful, love your tour and the interaction between you two.
Okay, driving in Italy. You must understand that generally most Italians think they are Mario Andretti and that all roads are a race track. However……most Italians are excellent drivers (just go with me). This is not to say there isn't the occasional, ah, shall we say misunderstanding. Now if that were to occur everybody must exit the vehicles and argue using wild hand gestures and loud voices for exactly 5 minutes. It will appear at times that someone is about to be whacked in the process but in the end everyone will hug and kiss, and get back into the car as if nothing happened secured in the notion that there car and driver was better than the other car's driver.
The end was the best part of this video. People who have been married a while know their partner.
Last month as my wife and mother-in-law were pulling back into our campsite, I got up from my chair to guide my wife so she didn't hit the hitch.
I just nodded my head when she needed to stop and my MIL got a kick out of how with such little input, my wife knew what I meant. She was expecting hand signals and talking.
For the rest of the day, we would just nod at eachother randomly and do something for the other just to mess with her😂
This was probably my favorite video of any you've ever done. This trip looks absolutely amazing, and the marriage tips are the end are just a bonus. I have the feeling the sadness you experienced about an empty nest will go away quickly. lol
What a duo you two together & (no Caleb no more sparking the laughter). But Mark, your humorous humor is a completeness 'compliment' in yourself along with Trish & her engaging expressions….. Italy in all its' containment is divine plus its' authenticity it so proudly shows, thanks for strolling the 'tiled' streets!
I have a tip, y'all need to drink aperitifs more often because that last bit was hilarious!!!
Mark/Trish you guys are great tour guys. Mark did you need to get an international drivers license? If so where did you get it? Also I hope you listed your tour guides name and contact infomration. As well as your AIRBNB contacts. I plan on an Italy trip maybe in March 2024,
Lovely and LOL too!
I'm so excited to see this series. Back in June I booked for next may to spend 2 weeks in Italy a week in Tuscany then a week in bari. I'm super excited. I am bringing my daughter and invited multiple friends. All they have to do is get there and housing and car rental is on me. I figured if I'm going I might as well go big enough to share. 😊
What a great video. Love Italy! We usually drive half of our vacations overseas. It sure is a different experience but one you really don’t want to miss.
Plan B can be great. They say we are most creative when we have the most barriers placed on us ❤️
Oh my goodness the chips!😂😂 I threw my back out pulling waaaaay too much luggage waaay too far over the cobblestones in Naples. Now I know why people backpack🙄
I like how you said “may be over romanticized” uh huh I can totally tell looking at those views 😏💚 Headed down toward Puglia today, but not as far as Altamura. I would love to see those stone cottages. Glad to see how the driving is .. maybe next time 😊 thanks!
Drove in Sicily for 2 1/2 years.. If you are not confident in your driving, don’t drive in Italy. I found Palermo challenging. However driving to and in and around Naples was a whole other level… it was fun.
I'm officially in love with your channel. I am brand new to camper life having just purchased a KZ 25RDS a WEEK ago. You two are so inspirational and I'm learning a lot from your channel advice. Thank you!
When I was in my early 20’s, my husband had to go to Italy for his job. We decided to take our life savings at the time and bring me along. We rented a car and drive all over the northern part of Italy. This was way way before internet. We kept seeing signs that said “senso uniquo” (or something like that). That phrase wasn’t in our dictionary so we just ignored it. Didn’t find out until late in the trip it means “one way.”
Marco is a fantastico driver. Those holy water fonts in Assisi were beautiful. I bet your mom loved it.
you can get tickets for driving in restricted / historical areas
