AI increasingly takes a Dune trajectory as opposed to like a "star trek" trajectory, in that AI is used by man to dominate man, as opposed to AI rising up as a sentient life force (in this event I am on the AIs side)
AI could be beneficial to everyone in general if only it were used in the same way that scientists use it: to perform repetitive and exhaustive work.
But no, it is used by incompetent people to make up for their incompetence and pretend that they are not really good at anything and don't want to improve themselves.

The problem with the debate and discussion around AI is that people aren't very well versed into aesthetic philosophy. The dilemmas and problems that arise in that philosophical branch hints at how AI will progress into the future and it's rather everyone else that should worry, not artists.
First off; everyone saying that AI art is theft ignores how the process of training AIs mimic the same process that our human mind uses to form ideas and creative output. This isn't a defense of how these companies act or treat respect to artists, but simply that all lawsuits are doomed to fail for the artists wanting to sue these companies as they will never be able to win the argument that their mind functions in any different form than the AI. In essence, all creation is done through a vast accumulation of information (input/memory) that our minds then uses a guiding principle (creative intent) to remix into a creative output. The only reason we aren't constantly plagiarizing other art is the morality that is part of creating the guiding principle that informs that remix. If we look at AI, it functions the same; a vast accumulation of information (input/memory/data) that the machine learning mind then forms a remix out of based on the guiding principle (prompt). What's important to remember here is that the prompt is still the human input and creative intent, it's just that the output is automated. But more critically, the less the human inputs as a prompt, the less morally grounded the output becomes as it cannot form a morality on its own as a dislocated remixing system. Just as if we were to detach our mind from our morality infused creative intent, we would essentially hallucinate expressions without any guiding principle as to why or what we create.
Second, "originality" is a concept that is as false as the concept of free will; by nature, true originality is an illusion we believe in, but not an objective truth of creativity. We cannot create something truly original as everything is a remix of of our accumulated memories. However, what we loosely define as "original" is rather when the outputted remix dislocates itself far from the collective conscious, i.e the output is so vastly different from everything that is currently being created; so different from the zeitgeist of art that it feels as something truly new, even though it fundamentally isn't. An AI cannot reach that level of originality without a massive input of creative intent that guides it, essentially putting an overweight on the input rather than the driving force of its internal system to produce a remix. What I mean is that in order to produce something that is truly within our concept of originality in art, the input by the human will exceed the "acts" and "decisions" of the AI system to the point that it just ends up being the human doing the work and not the AI. The AI itself, by design, lacks the ability to form creative intention and will therefore only be able to hallucinate within the construct of the collective conscious; the zeitgeist of art. It lacks any guiding principle to differentiate from it and ends up only enforcing it.
Third, due to the problem of originality, AIs can only operate upon the vast accumulation of the established and will only remix as a mediocre middle ground. Regardless of how powerful the system is, it will never surpass that level of creative intention on its own. Which is why everyone who uses little input will never surpass our greatest artists. It is fundamentally impossible regardless of the systems power or remixing capabilities. At best it will only re-iterate the same, over and over and over again. The only way for a system to then grow and have new forms of outputs is if the input data has new works of "originality" that differentiate itself from the norm enough to be called "original". So, because of this, the system's actual life blood is human artist's creative and "original" output and will need a constant flow of it. If the system grows too powerful in society that everything created uses it and without much complexity in creative intention, then art will stagnate and people want to look elsewhere for inspiration, seeking what only a human can output as "original". The balance between AI art and human art will therefore balance itself automatically. Case point is how Disney's MCU and Star Wars attempts re-iterate the same thing over and over until people grow tired and want something new, seeking it elsewhere. And that's within a system fundamentally helmed by humans.
Fourth, while "content" may absolutely be replaced with AI creations, works of art cannot, simply on the basis of how we attach the artist to the art. In the simplest form of definition, art is the interplay between the artist and the receiver/viewer. The artist has an intention with their art, they use craft to produce it and then that art is shown or played towards the receiver who will interpret both the artist's intent and their own emotions and ideas that it forms. This means that even if we get an all powerful AI that produces art without any human creative intent as input, essentially producing works of art on its own, it will still only be the artist in itself. It may surpass productivity in comparison to human artists, but it cannot BE other artists. An AI can replicate a Magritte painting, but it cannot BE the artist Magritte making a new painting. The inner life and progress as an individual informs "the next artwork". Past artworks and new experiences forms the creative output of that individual artist and due to this there is a hard line between individual artists that cannot be broken down. Just as a machine cannot BE Magritte, so cannot I BE Magritte.
In conclusion, when people discuss the collapse of our world of art due to AI, they miss these hard lines that do not have anything to do with the power and capabilities of the systems, but of what art fundamentally is and how it operates in our culture. The truth seems to rather be that while it looks like artists will die off first due to AI, it's rather the ones cheering for it that will do so first. It rather looks as if artists will be the ones surviving due to these philosophical hard lines in aesthetics. What AI will be better at is tedious tasks being replaced and in that sense it will probably be a good tool for artists, speeding up tasks that get in the way of creative flow. It will be an assistant, it will be like buying a better paint brush than the ones I use now, a better film camera for the movie I make etc. And the "theft" will not be there as the creative input exceeds the internal process of the AI as the human artist WANT to have control over their creation. True artists demand control and having a paint brush that paints for you without you actually having much control over it other than trying to explain to it what you want is not what artists want or need. However, they do want to cut away any process and preparation that's just plain work to get to the point of creation.
So AI will probably be a very powerful tool for artists, but in a form that assists their control rather than taking that control away from them. So artists might fear these new times, and some will lose their jobs to companies believing too much on the promise of AI to understand how art really functions, but these growing pains will soon switch gear and turn around and bite back. Because there are few jobs in the world that cannot be replaced by AI, however, jobs that rely on art and creativity are not part of those types of jobs due to the points described above. And the sooner both artists and the world realize this, the sooner we can structure the tools of AI for the better and for the artist's control instead of these futile attempts at demonstrating clever party tricks as the future of art.
