I'm waiting for them to nix this. Seems to cause a lot of problems. I do wish they would program the villager to leave the gold spots alone though. I don't mind picking up drops every few rows but that gold interruption is so frustrating.

😂😂😂 I was already laughing at the Halloween decorations, and when you said a lamp made of butts I lost it.
I use the switch, and I found if you fence them in near the crop you're harvesting, the items don't go everywhere. And it's easier to do it every 200 items you harvest at a time and then move your villager closer to your other crops and repeat. Also, if you use the switch, you can make fences easy by touching the screen to pull the arrow button.
I harvested over 800 pumpkins with this method. Took over 24hours before the game gave me the extra pumpkins

Your harvesting to many at once. If have a set limit of them it works just fine. Also have him in a pen near the place your harvesting so he won't get stuck on objects and drop the items everywhere
