  1. I don't think you're hypocritical for buying Secret Lairs, even if you previously had stated that you thought they weren't a product worth buying. Opinions change, after all. If you had passed a value judgement on other people who bought Secret Lairs and then proceeded to buy them, then that would definitely be hypocritical.

In my point of view, sneakerhead culture has always been overly stereotyped. Not to say there isn't plenty of reason for the stereotype – I mean, for as long as things have been "limited" people have sought to hoard them. But for every silly millionaire that latches onto a stamp because it's hilariously overpriced, or someone who just wants to stare at some sneakers on the wall, there will be someone who buys an Alpha Black Lotus just because they want it in their cube to play with. There will be someone who wants the Phyrexian Elesh Norn because she's their commander and it serves as a great cover card. There will be someone who buys the red neon Hidetsugu because they just really hella like that tattoo style for their Demon showcase.

When we look at those things from our own bubbles and chuckle, we sometimes forget to step back and realize that things got that way for a reason. Old cars are valued because of inherently different design principles between then and now, and genuinely unique (if not always "conventionally good") car aesthetics and function. Sneakers get hyped because of their ties to sports culture and an appeal to sort of make a fashion statement with it. Alternate card arts exist because we like this game so much that people want to make their decks part of themselves. Sometimes you want to let that goblin inside you chuckle as you shuffle your shiny pieces of cardboard – or maybe you're just one hell of a Rebecca Guay stan and you want as many pieces in your deck with her name on it. I mean, think about it – collector's information has existed on Magic cards for longer than it hasn't. Magic had already leaned in to sneakerhead culture a long time ago – just a milder version. Why do you think The Reserved List (TM) mistake exists, after all?

Secret Lairs and the recent push for more collectible alternates is ultimately good for the game's longevity as a product, I think. As long as WotC continues to understand that it's a good thing to keep Collector's Boosters, Set Boosters, and Draft Boosters separate, and that product pricings for one of these shouldn't affect the others, then they can make whatever-the-hell fancy-schmancy cardboard-printing tech they want. Someone will find a home for that Matter Reshaper. And another will just use a playset of roughed-up ones; and both can be happy. And that's ultimately why most of us play this game – to try and be happy. (Something something sentimental ending statement)

  2. So sad…
what a tragedy…we are at their mercy, they are going to suck our money away with Secret Lair Star Wars and other Fall Guys!

I sympathize I risk buying commander Tyranid deck just because it is unique and beautiful ;(

  3. ''it makes me happy […] but it is ultimately [our] grade that matters[…]"

    Right!
And we are as ''complex'' as the Prof is admitting here for the most of us contemplating every new sets/drops. Like if you really want it and can buy it then go with wtv floats your boat!

Just like he said be sure to think about it and maybe take a break and think again before making compulsive purchases cause its really a common way for everyone to cope and feel momentarily happy because we just rewarded ourselves ofc it feels good to get stuff you like!

It may have collectible/playable value (even if the $money value is not always there or wtv) but the real annoying thing is that I see this as Wizards found their own business model to implement and induce micro-transaction purchases kind of products.

Starting with multiplying products so it feels like you can control the lottery of getting the cards you want.

And Secret Lair Super Drops is like those season pass to get skins and coscmetic items, I know we get physcial cards here but my point is just that they really want you hooked on a monthly payroll and stimulate and create new consumption habits.

All those companies be acting like drug dealers smh.

  4. I think WotC found the right balance for these products. At first they felt like cash grabs, and just ways to print money for Hasbro. I've come around, as more and more stuff is fan service. I mean that in the most positive, sincerest way though. These are things that collectors and players of the game can really love, while opening the door for silly or cool art that betrays the standard/limited rules of printing.
