I checked this out myself just after seeing the unique art/mons. I had never tried an auto battler and trying this actually convinced me to try auto pets- which is okay. I really want to like Battle Mon but I just find it very confusing with what everything means and does 😅
It could just be me (although I asked many of the same questions as you did Ed) but I feel like the game could do with explaining things somehow. Still- it's just a testing phase so this could all change.

adding a type litteraly adds it to yout current types, but you can only have 3 types at max, also the more of the same type you have in battle, the more of a type-specific bonus you get from that type, like multuple dusk types make a clone of that ally whenever they die (one of my favorites)
Also resistances dont exist, they are weak to types, and beat types, thats it
