Let’s understand this with an oversimplified example. Let’s say you used to consume 30-40g of protein before, and now you’ve suddenly increased it to 100g. Here, you’ve shocked your digestive system. Anyway, now that 100g of protein has arrived, first it reaches the stomach, where digestive enzymes will try to break it down to some extent. Their team isn’t particularly large, so they’ll do what they can, and then the broken protein pieces will move on to the small intestine. Here, the team of enzymes is larger, but not large enough to convert all the proteins into amino acids. Anyway, the proteins that turn into amino acids will enter the bloodstream from here, and the remaining proteins will reach the colon, causing gas, bloating, and other digestive issues.
So, if we draw a takeaway from this, protein can cause digestive issues due to two reasons. Firstly, some proteins are difficult to digest, and secondly, there aren’t enough enzymes inside to handle them properly. So, what should you do then? Firstly, gradually increase your protein intake, and try to split it into meals. Then, consume fiber-rich foods, and thirdly, drink enough water to support the digestive system.
