  1. I wonder now; would it better to play this using AD&D / 2nd edition rules, or to play it using 5e rules. So far, my group of friends have played through a bunch of old modules using either D&D 3.5, 4e (briefly), Pathfinder 1e, and D&D 5e. My impression thus far has been that different rule sets kind of have an impact on the playing experience of these old modules.

  2. Reading your group and adjusting for how long they want the campaign to last is very good advice. So the adults with busy lives wanted it short and sweet, but your younger players like to take their time. Makes sense.

  3. Well damn. 41 years in this hobby and I just found out we've been doing it wrong. It's a race. We never knew that. A race to get to the finish line as fast as possible. I'm just gonna make up a list of monsters that would be cool to kill before my next session. When everyone sits down I'm gonna say. Hey I've decided you've gone through the Caves of Chaos. You killed ( ill refer to my list) and you found this treasure. You are all 5th level. Whole module completed in 10 minutes. We win yeah.

  4. I understand not wanting to "skill lock" key plot points of an adventure, but to just not roll Charisma or perception checks can really just invalidate some character builds. If whether the party is attacked by the wizards or not is based on your roll of 2d6 and not the actions of the party, or the "just roll play it out" instead of a charisma check, it may leave a bard player thinking their class choice was a waste of time. If a rogue who invested in Investigation gets told, "hey, we just let you find secret doors if you look in the right place, no roll required", then what was the point? If you're upfront with this before character creation, that's better, but it still just takes entire characters off the table as just having pointless abilities.
It is much closer to "old-school" play, and I appreciate that, but players that cut their teeth on 5e are going to be frustrated.

  5. Epic Hell that made me cheer lol. I played The Lost City back in the day we never made it to the Lost City but had a lot of fun. Now I'll have to revisit The lost city.

  6. DId you preserve the "This faction will welcome X, Y, and Thieves to join"?
    Always sounded weird to me.
I understand dwarfs or women to be included or excluded, but why thieves amongst other random classes, unless it's a faction devoted to steal (which would make sense if it's theives only)?

  7. Love the miniatures and story. Very evocative! I'm not a fan of abstract combat for my fantasy games… I'm more of a "The Fantasy Trip" player with its excellent, fast play tactical combat. That being said, if I were to hand-wave the hex movement I would take an approach similar to yours.

  8. I think my players made it to the third tier. It was a total slog, we lost interest, after playing several successful adventures prior. Your take is great. We used BECMI rules, and it was around 2012.

  9. This is one of your best videos yet!!! As a DM myself for over 40 years, this video brought me nostalgia because I have run this module multiple times. (One group actually defeated Zargon). It brought me inspiration because of your incredible story telling. Also your videos always bring me a feeling of validation because I run a very similar old school game that you describe in your videos. I always look forward to your exceptional content every week. Thank you!!!
