I would agree with you if normally, if the Witness's race was still relatively new to the Traveler and it's gifts. But they spent eons under it, flourishing. Even though it didn't give guidance or speak. They then decided that they would become "God" and reshape the universe as they saw fit after finding the Veil when they sought out meaning, AFTER EONS. That meaning would be to end the "Chaos" that the Traveler can create by eliminating life in the universe. I can understand why the Traveler fled.
We went fram having very little informarltion about the veil and witness to this giant info dump that answers so many questions and we got it in "season of the deep" wth
