💥 This is my reaction to Avatar: The Legend of Korra, the sequel series to The Last Airbender. In this series, we follow Avatar Korra as she follows in Aang’s footsteps. In this episode, Giant Unalaq and Giant Korra fight in Republic City over the fate of the next 10,000 years. 💥

  1. I believe she still has the Avatar State. It’s just not gonna be as powerful because she won’t have the knowledge/skills of the other avatars anymore. I really liked the show. Even though it has its faults, especially with this season. But I can’t wait for season 3. You’re gonna love it!

  2. Great stuff! Really glad you enjoyed this finale. I think this episode can be a little divisive, I think mainly for the big Kaiju (I hope that’s the right term) fight, which I can totally understand. For me personally I like it more than the book 1 finale, I just think the visuals and music are stunning and that from a character standpoint and a thematic one, this episode just hits so much harder.
I appreciated all your gushing over Korra. The place she’s in at the end of the episode feels earned. You really hit the nail on the head when you talked about how she doesn’t see any value in herself outside of being the Avatar and that makes her connecting with her inner spirit all the more powerful. And her defeating Unavaatu, with the spirit healing, something she struggled with for most of the season. I’m always a sucker for the villain being defeated with the very ability they taught to the hero.
I loved that the idea of finding the light in the dark was sprinkled throughout the season, I mean we hear that particular line in episode 2 from Unalaq himself. And Uncle Iroh’s line that if you look for the light you can often find it. I think that was all built really well.
I’m curious what your overall opinion is on her losing her connections to the past avatars. For me, while I really feel the sadness and loss, I ultimately respect the decision. This is literally a new world and the wisdom of the past can only take you so far. But also symbolically, they are entering a new age. Korra has literally started a new Avatar cycle. She is the new Wan of this era. Her deciding to keep the portals open plays into this idea as well. What might have been the right decision during Wan’s time, isn’t necessarily still the case, because as you said, the world has evolved since then.
And yes, Korra and Mako. Honestly, being able to acknowledge that a relationship just isn’t working and ending it amicably, is a real sign of maturity.
While book 2 might not be perfect, there is still so much of value here that I can’t understand anyone who would just write the whole thing off completely.
Wow I just realised this was a really long comment. Really enjoyed your long discussion as well. 🙂
I very much look forward to book 3!

  3. My biggest issue with this finale was that Bolin and Eska didn't get together

Initially, Raava wasn't supposed to fuse again with korra. It was supposed to be Jinora replacing Raava. But nickelodeon deemed that to be too dark, so we got it the way it is

Since Vaatu and Unaloq completed the avatar fusion ritual, i suspect that Vaatu will begin reincarnate into a new mortal body, beginning the dark avatar cycle

Korra will still be able to go into the avatar state, but from now on, it'll more or less just be a power boost, and not the cumulative knowledge and experience of the past avatars. Korra was also the last avatar of the first cycle, and the first avatar of the new cycle, which is a truly unique position to be in

Asami will get justice in the end, don't worry. Also there will be no more Mako romances for the rest of the series.

Season 3 is so good. It's better than the entirety of AtLA. Including season 3 of AtLA. I know the genwunners will get butthurt about what i said, but LoK is objectively the superior series

  4. She can still use the Avatar state. Just like Wan could when he permanently fused with Raava. She just wont have the knowledge and skills of all the past Avatars. Korra also is technically the first Avatar in a new cycle.

  5. Something I find really compelling about Korra that you touched on is that she has this layer of bravado at the surface that craters whenever anything unexpected happens and reveals all of her fears and insecurities–S1E4, the S1 ending where she tells people to move on with their lives, the S2 ending. She is really, seemingly, desperate to be viewed as the Avatar, because that's all she's ever wanted to be. Can't wait to see your thoughts on season 3 hehe

Also, so many people in the fandom misunderstand that "connections of the past lives" business as meaning the past lives are dead, for some reason.

Very minor Kyoshi novel spoiler, but we do know that it is possible for the avatar spirits to intentionally sever themselves from the current avatar, so there's no reason to believe that Aang's or Kyoshi's or etc.'s spirits are gone, just that the connection between them and the current avatar is gone.

Additionally, though I'm not sure it's even been confirmed, the light Jinora is holding, when you change the light levels a bit, looks suspiciously like a certain teapot from which "you can still taste a little light in every cup", I love that little detail.

  6. Although I do consider this season to be the weakest, I still enjoy season 2. My main gripe with the finale, is that I feel that Jinora’s action at the end is basically a Deus ex Machina.
Really looking forward to your season 3 reaction.

  7. Another good reaction and discussion. I still hold out hope that the connections can be regained, but I'll wait until season 4 to explain why I believe that. In the meantime I eagerly await to your reactions for the amazing 3rd season!

Yes, the wacky love triangle is FINALLY over. The awkward moments won't have fully disappeared yet, but they will with time.

  8. I was curious about your opinions on the season finale and the whole season altogether because I remember that I didn't like it 😂 but your thoughts were totally fair and I think all the fans could use some of your logic 👍 I love listening your intelligent analysis
