My whole take away from this arc is Vegapunk may be the smartest man in world because of his innovations. He is great at research but is incredibly naive. Like him being smart enough to create a power source that can power the world but wipe nations off the map and thinking the world government wouldn’t use it for nefarious purposes.
Maybe Vegapunk wanted to die to atone for his “sins” thinking of passing his will onto someone more capable and worthy. This arc is probably a smaller version of what happened during the void century because you would think an earth shattering event would at least be a verbal story told throughout centuries on each island. Maybe Joyboy died willingly?

People aren’t realising just how crazy Joy Boy having better haki than Shanks is.
Assuming Joy Boy had access to all the same abilities as Luffy it means that base Joy Boy would be logically capable of beating Shanks since he would have the passive buffs of a mythical zoan + better haki than Shanks. This man then had access to gears 1-5 presumably and probably better control than them. Shanks vs Joy Boy would probably be as difficult as Lucci vs Luffy.
The thing is vegapunk wanted to die for his sins can’t forget about that, he literally created an energy source that wiped out a whole island. Bro had done numerous questionable things in the name of science that he felt he had to atone for. I feel like oda was trying to make it clear Vegapunk is not a good guy and never was he had to many chances to be on the right side of history but chose personal gain instead. Vegapunk was a bad person who just died doing a good thing in my opinion
