This Cave is Bugged #3 – Icarus Open World Styx Map

The new open world mode in Icarus allows you to have a persistent map like in an outpost but use a full map and have missions as well. No more rebuilding a base EVERY mission!

More about the game:

Trailblazers and treasure seekers from a dozen backgrounds, they sold up from Earth and Mars before setting out on the journey to Icarus. Arriving on the scarred, yet strangely familiar alien world, many asked whether they had made the right decision. But by this point, there was no turning back.

The earliest to land on Icarus, the First Cohort were granted mining licenses in its Earth-like zones, where natural resources could be harvested to boost their chances of survival and success.

Many of the First Cohort were already in space when the United Development Agency advertised – as close to covertly as was legally possible – for ‘contractors’. Others sold up on Earth and rode the newly-opened Brazilian space elevator to orbit, or decamped from Mars, before embarking in longsleep for Icarus, almost two years distant by NME ship.

Converging at last on Icarus, they shared a common mix of hope and desperation – a state that would come to define life on the planet for the First Cohort.

If you pre-ordered Icarus and participated in our Beta Weekends, your characters and progress will be wiped at launch. Don’t worry – for this launch weekend (until Sunday midnight PST) everyone gains a special 10% XP bonus, so you will progress faster the second time around.

Once your character hits Level 30 you’ll gain access to Tier 4 of the Tech Tree that makes advanced engineering and electronics possible.

This tier begins with unlocking the Fabricator, a 3D-printer-like device that provides materials like Titanium and Composites for your tools, armor and weapons.

Naturally, electricity requires a Generator. Once placed and fueled you can run cables to power other nearby electrical devices such as the Refrigerator (for the Desert), Heaters (for the Arctic), the Electric Furnace and Hydroponics. This electrical system lays the foundation for automation and other mechanical systems to be added to Icarus in future.

Hydroponics is a valuable addition to our Farming system, which wise Prospectors invest time and effort in. For example, the Reed Flowers used in making Stamina Buff Paste are only found along river banks or around lakes. By taking the time to farm them and other rare plants you can create your own crop close to your home base or in a biome where they don’t grow at all.

Unlocking Tier 4 also grants you access to one of Icarus’ most sought-after tools, the Extractor which is necessary for mining Exotic Matter.

When Icarus’ terraforming failed the planet was nearly abandoned, until a team of researchers discovered the cause: deposits of Exotic Matter believed to exist only within the hearts of collapsing stars. While these ‘impossible’ materials had corrupted the terraforming and poisoned the air, they were also valuable beyond measure. Their properties would enable widespread interstellar travel, affect mass, alter biology and spark extraordinary new scientific breakthroughs.

The UDA and the Factions operating on Icarus reward Prospectors handsomely for any Exotics they can bring back to orbit.

  1. It's unusual to build up to Tier 4 in a cave. Normally not having to deal with cave lung and worms is reason enough to prioritise a stone structure, but you also have the benefit of more compact and user friendly bench placement. One hot building tip; if making a structure larger than a 2 x 1, you can use the stone half pieces at the roof edges to protect the walls below. This makes for extremely economical structures where you can make the floor, walls and support pillars out of wood and just place a stone roof over it to protect from storms. On Olympus storms don't damage stone, and on Styx only the most severe storms (usually only hard mode) will only damage stone building pieces very slowly – so slowly that you've got plenty, plenty time to upgrade the roof to concrete which is impervious.

As a general rule, when building anything other than a temporary structure, you should put down pillars to support it. These prevent heavy items like furnaces and the fabricator from overloading and collapsing the floor, and also enables you to build higher structures. It's always nice to have a high roof as it allows you to place cupboards and benches on shelves which makes the most of your floorspace and for more ergonomic layouts with appropriate materials in cupboards above each bench.

  2. Did your graphics issues just show up? I saw an article that some Win11 machines got an MS update that turned on GPU debugging features and caused lag and it made me curious if this what what you suffered from.
