I had (notice the word HAD) a problem with 2 Grey Cat Birds last fall attacking my tomatoes. I have bird baths outside my deer fence, and most birds, squirrels, & raccoons enjoy them. I have a couple animal cameras to watch their antics. It's strange the deer don't drink from them, but they love my grass behind the garden. It's a wildflower and grass prairie kind of situation. Primarily for the pollinators and the rabbits so they don't try to tunnel under and into the garden.
Last year I used Pepper spray to discourage the birds. It seemed to work. This year (2022) they brought all their friends and figured out how to eat the inside of a tomato through small holes. I didn't realize the extent of the problem until the tomatoes started rotting and were half empty inside! I was about to install a bird netting roof, but I wouldn't be able to install an10-11 foot high roof before the end of this year. A lot of my garden has 9 foot high string trellis, and the netting would have to be above that. Then I came across 8×12 in party favor bags with draw strings. Instant success!! Get the green ones. The color confuses the birds when they do a fly by. When they stop by, they can't get to the tomato.
July Heat:
The 99 deg July decimated all my flowering crops. With the UV, the flowers got over 101 deg f. that kills all the pollen, and no fruits. I got 40% shade cloth, designed a pully system to haul the shade cloth up next July, and pull it down when the temps come down in August.
All my greens and root vegies were up in March when we had 2 days in the 20's deg. I covered them with row cover, and they did just fine, not even a whimper! I'm in lower NY, Zone 7A. Maybe 45-60 minutes from you. Wish I could send you a couple pictures. ๐Or a video of a raccoon that got water up his nose while drinking from the bird bath!

You are so RIGHT because dumb people would have a hard time gardening!! lol Seriously, I tell people all of the time you can grow food especially here in NC because of the climate. You just need some seeds, dirt and sun. For the most part rain gives you all the water you need.
I am proud to hear you are caring for your wildlife. Setting up solar water fountains (made from a simple 20โ circular dish from store & $15 solar powered pump from eBay ) was the first thing I added in the garden for passerby animals. Also, Quench the birdโs thirst & they stay for a insect snack or two ๐
