You get the impression that humans disappeared tens of thousands of years ago. But still around doing whatever during all that time and still human enough to be recognised by the ship.
?? Sounds like an interesting storyline, and enjoyed it. Not to put a damper on it — time line is iffy (a commercial semi, train, mid-size military vessel) wound take time to check every bolt, rivet etc. Compounded by the fact it is going into a vacum on what type of fuel. Then there are the electronic systems to check. Replacement parts ? And learning to operate all the systems to get it up and running. Going into battle with no training against seasoned sailers. Looking at years or decades of study the ship with out a manual for reference to all things. Would very much like to hear an expanded version of the story.
Albedo Anthropomorphics has a scene in it. An EDF research ship finds an unknown advanced ship adrift in space. They almost rammed the thing because its hull refracted all sensors and it had zero energy emissions… The fact that they even found it was a 1 in a billion chance.
the EDF was made up of versions humanoid species.. who had simply woke up.. one day… in possession of tech equatable to late 20th century, but no memories of their culture or history… they began creating their own society their own culture… they took to space to look for their creators… they took to the stars but found nothing.
until this ship.. inside the ship was the remains of a single human… a creature that showed all the markers of evolution but at the same time… had many of the common genes to all the other species.. not only did they come from the same planet originally… they evolved there…
amongst the belongings on the ship, they found a single book. preserved in the vacuum of space. Something that might give the different species hope, a reason why they were abandon, forgotten… a reason the humans left them alone. The book had a single word title….
