We used to make wood houses out of slabs if we wanted a lavafall or fireplace, since (petrified) wood slabs didn't catch on fire and they look the same as wood full blocks.

Stop making me feel old. This just reminds me of that day the nether reactor core became useless, it was version 1.00 the full release. If you are to young to know why, this block made a small red glowing obsidian, yes that was also a block removed with the core, that substituted for the nether till Markus could code it in. It cost a ridiculous amount of gold and even needed a few diamonds. Inside was a hollow chamber that spawned nether things such as neather warts to even whole zombie pigmen, also removed with a now remodeled zombified piglin. And then we also can't forget about the poor furnace minecart. I actually had a use for that with my copius amount of coal. That shit was so easy to get full on before the caves update.
I never even heard of this slab.

it also wasn't an official block till a few years ago, it was always just a glitched out wooden slab. They called it that and added it as a separate block to commemorate the glitch rather than remove or fix it.
