It seems quite likely the family actually knew someone was living in the attic and was purposefully hiding the fact. My guess would be the father had deserted, returned home, and was living in the attic with his family knowing about it. He was probably living in the attic because he was afraid of being arrested for desertion. The weird part of this scenario, however, would be "why would they hire maids if they were trying to hide someone there?"

I have a theory about the suspect and motive for the deaths. It’s based on a concept from Greek mythology and biblical literature. There was said to have been a foreign newspaper found at the site but all the reports never specify the name or language of said paper. I suspect that paper indicates the motive of the person responsible and that the family’s demise was a case of the sins of the father finally catching up. But what other sins Andreas Gruber committed other than incest I do not know. That’s just my opinion however.

Yeah I would say that the fact he had 4 days doesn't exclude the neighbor, he could have just planned it so that he hids in the spotlight ultimately knowing there will be no evidence, my problem with it is why would he live there like that, no way it was all a play, why would he go around the woods etc
