  4. TFW they mention Ni no Kuni, but not WoFF Maxima, which would fit the article MUCH more than the Chocobo Mystery Dungeon game. They also missed Siralim 3 (not that it will be too relevant once Ultimate hits Switch).

    Not too sure how many of the people that write these articles see this type of video and make revisions when applicable, but I'd like to see an update with the valid criticisms here taken to heart.

It's easy to make Pokemon references to Ni No Kuni due to the familiar system being a monster-catching mechanic, but they should remove that from the list as the familiars are only sidekicks and you have the option to fight without them. It's a JRPG with a monster-catching mechanic. Speaking of which, I have a copy of Ni No Kuni Remastered rotting in my boxes I really need to platinum… XD

    Also, thank the article for pointing out that they made a collection of Cyber Sleuth. I loved the first game and wanted to get back to it, but I was sort of burned on the trophy list. I just found they're selling it on GameStop's site. 🙂

    Welll then you have never played a Final Fantasy before. They should have said "It's Pokemon MYSTERY DUNGEON, but Final Fantasy flavored." After all, there was a series of Pokemon games using this genre. I've completed them all except Super Mystery Dungeon since that completely changed the whole recruiting mechanic.

  12. Not defending Nintendo Life, but I think they included Digimon Survive because of Pokémon Conquest. The only one that mentioned a side game title(that was read aloud) was Toem. If Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Everybuddy included the PMD title on the Switch then the author did a mediocre job

  14. Oh for the love of… I've heard of 75% of this list and played or am playing 50%, and this article is so far off the mark it isn't even funny. Comparing SMT V to Pokemon is like comparing an apple to an orange. They're both sorta round, they're both fruit, but that's about it. Did this person even play the games or did they just pick anything they thought might be similar enough to bluff their way through?

  16. Bugsnack have nothing to do with monster Taming at all. It's abit of pokemon snap because you do take pictures of the bugs base off food and your only catching some so a NPC is happy to have more pets. Your mostly solving what happened to the person that invited you to this island and eating different snacks so your character look goofy like a sasuage nose and frie hair with sushi roll arms. Still fun game but have no real time to monster rising other than their monsters. So I guess it would be like calling ghost&goblin a pokemon like because your slaying monsters lol

I was a hardcore Pokemon fan back in high school (started with Pokemon Red) and tbh, in this day and age, I'd rather play all these indie monster taming games BEFORE I play any of the more recent Pokemon games. That true and tested Pokemon formula has gone stale for me. Just like Ash Ketchum, Pokemon never grew up. Sure, he might put on new clothes but they're still essentially the same old 10 year old Ash. If you still like Pokemon to this day, props to you but I cannot, in good conscience, spend 60 bucks on a game that I'll drop after 20 hours when in that same amount of money, I can buy 5-6 indie monster taming games and have a blast. I can imagine Pokemon fans still buying the game even if it's 100 bucks just because it's Pokemon (but that's a whole other can of worms).

    Also, I do think the term "Pokemon-like" should not be used anymore. Just name it monster taming games, monster catching games, monster training games, monster management games, monster RPGs, etc. Imagine you going to a new school, studying and minding your own business but your teachers kept comparing you to that one student who graduated 20 years ago. 😂

  19. The thing is I've actually never been interested in Pokemon, and so whenever I've heard about a game being a "Pokemon-like" game it had put me off. However, when Temtem came out I was really interested in it, and after that interest I took another look into Coromon, Nexomon (games which I was put off playing) and then later on Cassette Beasts (thanks Ed), I have really loved playing them. Story, goals, themes, designs, features etc really make a difference.

  25. I'd say ooblets is more like harvest moon. The fact you give specific crops/items to convince ooblets to fight you And the fact the fights give you the seed for that ooblet species is a fun way to tie farming with the ooblet battles. You can also build some little houses and machinery for the ooblets to take care of your crops, like those little sprites from the harvest moon mineral town. Its a great game, though I dont think ed will enjoy the farming aspects of it lol

  28. Calling Slime Rancher a Pokémon like makes me want to throw up from anger. There's not a god damn thing similar to Pokémon, at all. God I hate these fucking articles.

    It's fucking IMPOSIBLE to find shit these days thanks to all this crap. Anytime I ever try and find games similar to other games… I get flooded with fucking NOTHING that's even close. Example: "Are there any other games like/similar to Fortune Street". Result: Every Mario party, Monopoly, any fucking game with a board and dice, random board games, random party games, and anything in-between. Not shown, a game that's actually similar to Fortune Street OR the other games from JP from this series. Culdcept Revolt is VERY similar to Fortune Street but with a twist that it's more of a vs with monster fights partially thrown in. But it's a thousand percent closer to fortune street than any single game on any list of 10-50 games you can find. It's just so aggravating, knowing there are games people could be looking for based on other games they enjoy and they're just going to get handed crap or unrelated shit.

    Also, Bugsnax is nothing like Pokémon either. It's "Children's first body horror" game with puzzle solving.

  34. I hope you don't mind, but I can help with the Chocobo Mystery Dungeon game! I don't know what the article says, but it's nothing like Pokemon. Not even like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.

    Chocobo's Dungeon: Everybuddy is actually a remake of the original game on the Wii. And I am sure the part they are saying is like Pokemon isn't even in the original so that kinda blows up in their face.

    In the new version, you can get lucky and get monsters on your side… But you can also make friends with other characters in the story and have their help instead. You could even download DLC with chocobos with different classes, which I admit to doing and using! This is nothing like Pokemon and Chocobo himself can even change into other classes! This is nothing like Pokemon, so the fact this article tried to say it's Pokemon like is baffling!

    When it comes to Chocobo, wouldn't recommend it because of Pokemon. I would however suggest it if you like Final Fantasy, chocobos and don't mind a mystery dungeon type game! Heck, I would even recommend the Wii version if you can find it! It saddens me the remake doesn't have the song Door Crawl, but I am guessing they just lost the rights to it.

    I was similarly baffled with Nexomon Extinction… Yeah, they need to watch your videos. I mean, it is Pokemon like… But yeah! Still, because of you, not only did a download a great game in it's own right, but it was easy for the most part to rewire the type chart in my head! Uh, minus wind because I mix that up still!

    Also, the long list of choices for the lead… Was not expecting that! I can't remember if my choice had a tail, but I did love the ears on top of her head! I found it funny when I saw a picture later on and she was defaulted to look like the original female lead there!

  35. People need to learn what a GENRE is and stop defining things by popular entries of that genre. Any platform fighter is a Smashlike, any game with monster collection is a Pokemonlike, any Difficult game is a Soulslike, etc etc. It shows a fundamental misunderstanding of media and clear bias towards the property. Any journalist doing this is a bad journalist.

  39. I am tired of how they compared Digimon video games so much with Pokemon. It's more like a monster-taming RPG compared to the gameplay of Pokemon. Also, how could you compare Ni no Kuni with Pokemon? Getting Familiars in that game is not much of a focus but something you can do, along with how it's an action RPG.

  41. Now that I learned the correct terminology to diferentiate the genres instead of just calling those games "clones", it feels embarassing reading a "journalist" write that. Gosh, "Toem" and "Chocobo" shouldn't even be on that list! One is a puzzle game about photography, that just so happens to have a small detail with Snap (that is a spin off) and the other is a MYSTERY DUNGEON game, it is on the title!

  44. At first I thought "Digimon Survive is not like Pokemon", but the more I thought about it, Digimon Survive is kinda like if you mixed the battle of Pokemon Conquest with the story exploration of Pokemon Masters Ex. So I guess in a way it kinda is like Pokemon.
