These 7 JRPGs Are Built Different…And That's Good!

Let’s be real… JRPGs can get a bit repetitive and stale. When you play one you play all others, but there are JRPGs out there that have vastly different battle mechanics from the others. So in this video, I will highlight 7 JRPGs with the most unique and unusual battle mechanics.

In the comments below, let me know what games have a unique battle system. I would love to hear your opinions!

  1. I'm surprised there is no mention of the Last Remnant on here 👀

Although frustrating to play and reliant on luck a bit. It's a game that predates Unicorn Overlord with having a platoon instead of a singular character.

A 7/10 game imo, but a good 7/10 in my eyes lol

  2. Just finished 13 sentinals it was so well done! On the opposite side I hated chain of memories I felt like organising my cards and numbers whilst in fast paced battles just didn't mesh well with me.

  3. The Legend of Heroes: Trails though Daybreak 1 & 2 is also has a unique battle system that combines action combat with turn based combat. You can switch in between the two modes except for boss fight (bosses are always in turn based). The Trails in the Sky remake and the new Kai no Kiseki seem to also system.

The rest of the series is strictly turn based.

I do recommend the series to play, but following the story is like watching the MCU movies.😂

  4. Happy to see FF13 getting some screen time , it’s actually second favorite game in the series next to FFX-2
The hole FF13 trilogy is interesting though the third game is my least favorite.
Bought a ps3 just to play FF13 ( would love to see the game available to play on the switch ❤)

  5. I was gonna mention the Atelier Ryza series, but I know the 1st Ryza game kinda shares similarities to FF13's battle system, tho you can switch party members whenever you want, and I'm aware the sequels are more refined and suped up as well as Atelier Yumia taking the sequels' battle system but on steroids

  6. It's nice to try something new. Heroland is also built different, it first seems it does auto-battle, but it does a bad job at it. Without guidance from the tour guide, the party will just die from uncoordinated bad choices. The game has a funny story and a nice graphic style, it's quite enjoyable once you get into it.

  7. What a nifty vid. Some nice picks for uniqueness.

I would Eternal Sonata has a very unique battle system. It is a true action-turn based. Not what FF7R, Legends of Heroes and Metaphor has advertised.

Each character and enemy take their turns as any turn-based combat, but do it in an action gameplay way. Not only that, you got a time limit to execute your actions and depending where you stand in the enviroments, attacks and even enemies change.

I need this game to be remastered, and show the pseudo action-turn based games how it truly is done.

  8. I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the TWEWY series yet when it comes to unique mechanics. Those games have you mixing and matching trends with a rhythmic battle system, one of which that takes advantage of every feature the DS has.

  9. If you ever do a part 2 of this, consider checking out Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked. It’s got a very unique chessboard mechanic where your character moves and attacks differently depending on the race of the demon you equip. Not to mention it still has the same unique battle system from the other SMT games on top of it.
