  1. Hi from Texas! I moved here from a part of Mississippi that is the land of hurricanes and daily afternoon rain showers. Then came our first summer in the land of Where are all the trees? when the foundation repair specialist told me that it is customary to surround your foundation (but not too closely!) with a soaker hose to water your foundation. To which I unceremoniously blurted, “Where I’m from, we water the plants, not the buildings!” He got a good laugh, and we got pillars under our cracked foundation.

  2. Thanks for the laughs ladies, you're both awesome!
I'm in TX, and can report my husband used to water the foundation during summer dry spells. He stopped doing that when he realized the dirt around the foundation plumps right back up after a good rain. Something the hose didn't do. Did wash some of the dirt away, tho!

  3. Hey Laura, I have a book question for you. I'm looking for a stone age or pre 1000s novel or series for my 11 year old high level readers. My grandparents gave me Clan of the Cave Bear to read at that age and though it was fascinating to read, I remember the rape scene and am not ready to give that to my girls yet (these are my twin daughters, I'm not a teacher). So if you have any good recommendations, they are in 6th grade and just starting world history. Also I'm from the desert. We don't water the foundation or patios because that wastes precious water, but they do get cracks–usually small hairline cracks. It has never been a problem for us. Maybe in a place used to moisture that suddenly dried out it might be more problematic?

  4. When we lived in Texas, our coworkers told us about the whole foundation watering thing. I think it has to do more so with the extremes of seasons, so lots of rain, and then no rain in the summer. Also the soil was clay, so that was a factor too. Now we live off the side on a hill on bedrock, so different challenges hahaha. My FIL gutted and renovated the house they are living in, so my spouse as a teen helped him, and so my spouse knows how to do all sorts of things. Dry wall, sweating pipes, wiring, painting, floor refinishing. So some of that home stuff is just tribal knowledge.

  5. I was filling in for a live-in caretaker for a family's grandfather. The son was adding on to the side of that home. The earth along that side of the house was dug away in prep for the next work that needed to be done. One night the foundation crashed away from under the house. I heard a big noise and got up to check on Ed because it sounded like someone falling. He was asleep. The next morning, the son came by and saw the fallen cement blocks. He ran into the house to make sure we were okay. We had to go around the house to make sure we could open/shut all the windows. Then he explained why and about the work being done. The contractor told him to expect that whenever the earth is taken away from a foundation there's a good chance the foundation collapses as that's the nature of house-building and why they put pilings in the basement to be sure nothing happens to the home. The foundation needs the earth to stand up. All the windows worked and we were fine. It was a weekend and, unfortunately, the crew was called to the site that morning to continue work.

Beautiful work today, Leslie and Laura. Sounds like Purl misses her friend Leslie. She's so funny!
    Take care.

  6. Beautiful ladies!

Happy National Dog Day to Buffy, Purl, new family member(yay!), and Neelix (in whatever place all the dogs go to for their reward)! ☺ Just to make sure you get her point, Purl does the look directly into your eyes along with the bark, 😂
Very intrigued by the fair isle carrying the floats along the right side–new to me, always getting the goods from The Knit Girllls! ☺ And thanks for the word on Starbucks pumpkin spice!
Everything y'all do is inspiring and reminds me to take the time to craft.
Cars should NOT do that on birthdays, hope her day was otherwise spectacular 🎂🎉 Love On the Spectrum sounds like must see. Maybe the new local bakery will improve. Thanks for your time with us!

  7. I never thought about O Brother Where Art Thou being a retelling of the Odyssey! Of course I’m not a super attentive movie watcher, I either have to knit, or I fall asleep. Now I have to watch again.
