The Worst Car Wreck in Tennessee State History

Hey, you guys, Chet the Dream Poet here. Come anchor down for another vlog today as we walk along the highway and talk about one of Tennessee’s darkest stories. On December 11th, 1990, there was a light fog that blanketed the East Tennessee portion of I-75. While not out of the unusual, within ten minutes the fog became so thick that people couldn’t see the road in front of them. This is the story of the 99-pile-up up. 1. I remember it well…ol George King from Charleston ran his wrecker all day long…he had sad stories. The fog use to be awful couldn't see 1ft in front of your vehicle. Thanks Chet. U get that email I sent about civil war times ?

  2. I came that way many times in the early seventies, "swooping" home from D.C. where I was stationed, usually arriving in the early morning hours. This was before I-75 was completed and we had to get off in Lenoir City and take Hwy. 11 to somewhere above the Hiwassee (Calhoun, I think — exit 36, or maybe Athens, I forget) to get back on again. Many of those times there was a fog in that area, but one particular time it was so thick it was impossible to see any distance in front of you. I immediately got off I-75 and back onto Hwy. 11 for fear of getting rear-ended by someone "driving too fast for conditions."
I thought back then Bowaters was a big contributor to heavy fogs in that area, and was a contributing factor to that horrific pile-up when it happened.

  3. Great video. All of the younger generation I would say know nothing about this or ever heard it. I was 16 at the time and thanks to my mother I was not allowed to drive on the interstate yet during this tragic event. Another great video and I shared on FB. Also just have to say….. nice shirt there buddy. Lol
