  1. I love wandering the old world's fair grounds at Flushing Meadows/Corona Park in Queens. My parents have some cool stories of going to that fair as kids, and how mind blowing it was.

  2. I rock with it's a small world, to my mind the comfort of amusement parks, but mostly Disneyland, is the commitment to happiness and pretending there's no sorrow or negativity and small world encapsulates that vibe better than any other attraction iconic

If the Disneyland pimps had titles Derrick's would be purest purist

  3. You know what's cool is that it feels like William Osman is trying to make a new world's fair. Just inviting the coolest inventions to come and be in the same room together… World's fair without building a new Eifel Tower each time I guess haha

  4. Here in Chicago the Museum of Science and Industry was the only permanent structure built for the White City and you cab still visit today! Beautiful structure.

  5. Shanghai is my favorite city on earth, I actually attended the Shanghai 2010 World's Fair and it was a highlight for sure! It's a crazy futuristic city, but if you are looking at futuristic cities in China, Shenzhen and Chongqing are pretty much on par. Xiongan isn't built yet but it's considered a very futuristic project in urban planning.

Sidenote: The fake world of Chinese influencers is definitely something worthy of an episode. Things like the replica Eiffel Tower are just the surface really.

  6. Jimmy Corrigan: Smartest Kid on Earth is a great comic that heavily features the 1892 World's Fair in Chicago. It's only toward the end, but features these beautiful illustrations of these crazy structures Derrick and Johnny talk about here. Highly recommend

  7. the worlds fairs are always wild to me because my whole life I could not imagine the entire world coming together to dick measure their scientific achievements, these days they'd just rather fight proxy wars with their new technology instead

  8. I have always found Worlds Fairs interesting and would love to go to one someday. I didn't realize that these things usually go on for months. I have also had Devil in the White City sitting on my shelf for a few years now and maybe I should get to reading that soon

  10. Television debuted at the 1939 Worlds Fair and a 17 year old Betty White was the model chosen to demonstrate it. Also, Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway is still alive- it was the CEO of the company that died. And the “Can You Hear Me Now” guy worked for Verizon from 2002 to 2011 but quit because they asked him to stay in the closet. When T-Mobile hired him they featured him with his husband in a commercial

  11. Enjoyed the discussion on Walt Disney's involvement at the NY World's Fair. Despite originally being conceptualized as a self-sufficient corporate commune, EPCOT became the theme park version of a permanent World's Fair when it opened in 1982.

The park's attractions were focused on scientific advancement, the history and emergence of technology and communication, and the World Showcase was an attempt at replicating the Global Village. The original concept of EPCOT as a city, and the construction of Walt Disney World as a whole, was largely the result of Walt's friendship with the now infamous urban developer Robert Moses, who organized of the 1964 World's Fair.

  13. My favorite olde timey cartoons when I was younger were from the "…of Tomorrow" series where they would show you the kitchen, car, or House of tomorrow with all the crazy features. Made me laugh and probably partially why I eventually became an engineer.
