  1. Eggers wanted the movie to be authentic to the period so all of the clothes, tools, housing, etc are copied from over 400 years old. Most admirable is the language, Old English, which the actors learned the dialogue in. That is very impressive!

  2. I binge true crime and horror movies etc. I’m not from America but I can’t name anything of the top of my head in Pennsylvania. There was only 1 witch trial back in the 1600’s – are you referring to that Zach – 😅😂 love it.

  3. This movie definitely went way over your heads. This should have been very easy to follow if you remember any early American history from like high school. These people were representations of English puritanical Christian settlers who were very very extreme in their beliefs and practices. Women were hated and it was easy to be accused of being a witch and punished/killed for it in those times. The Salem witch trials happened later in history. The girls brother looking at her inappropriately because he is likely going through puberty and developing adult urges but they are all living in isolation with each other…should have been very obvious lol and the bloodletting they performed on him was common in those days when someone was sick with a fever etc. is commonly known. One should have felt empathy for the girl who was being treated so badly by her family and used as a literal scapegoat. In the end she was freed from her oppressive family system and given ‘education’ and a better life.

  4. The movie is very open to interpretation. There is no real answer as to what was the point. It’s one of those make what you can of it movies. To me Anya’s character was like you said gaslit and pushed towards becoming a witch. The devil used the witch to plague this family. Which caused the family to turn on one another and caused Anya’s character to resort to going to the devil for answers which he uses an opportunity to make her a witch and serve him.

  5. This is incredible. Best horror movie since The Shining for me. The Witch is about how women were treated under a Puritan Christian society, where every other woman was blamed as a Witch by their own family. Persecution will turn people into the villain they say you are. The Satanic temple endorsed this movie and they put it perfectly: "It’s a criticism of a theocratic patriarchal society and a fair representation of the stresses that puts on a community."

  6. There's a funny fan theory that Thomason is the final girl in The Menu, as her deal with the devil had her living "deliciously" forever and wouldn't always bear witness to humanity's madness.
