The Wasted Potential of Borderlands 3

This video is a summary of all of my critiques and frustrations with Borderlands 3, from the omission and lack of respect for certain characters, to the obnoxious depictions of some of the new ones.

In addition, I explain all my ideas and suggestions for improving the game’s story, including my reinterpretations of some of the most infamous cutscenes in the game.

  1. I understand what you were trying to do but having NPCs take the kills of so many main story bosses would feel lame as hell to play.
Putting in effort to beat something to have a cutscene start and have a rando steal the kill doesn't feel good.
Also there are other ways to allow for moments of characterization than having an NPC spawn in to get a narrative kill after the player kills a boss.
Like having them intervene in the cutscenes the player character gets lobotomized for.

Over all I really enjoyed your rewrite.

  2. I wouldn't say the story itself is bad, the twins are bad amd had they tones down the cringe and delivered the story with more serious tone and less cringe it could have been amazing.. the story itself is actually good imo, the way it's delivered just sucks ass..

  3. I HATE how they did aurelia in borderlands 3 she is by far my favorite character and the way they just killed her as if she had no potential as a character despite no other character is like her I hope she comes back in 4 and its revealed that we killed a body double in 3 like.ahe could definitely afford to do that cause she's a rich bitch

  4. Honestly, I thought the big reveal was Aurelia just testing Wyanewright on being a worthy husband for Hammerlock while also enjoying some of her villainous tendencies. Mabe she resents her brother cuz he was able to live free from the family business while she needed to embrace it.
Jakobs is the second most ridiculed company in borderlands, only second to tediore. Mabe Aurelia wanted to ensure that Jakobs was strong. If she took over, Aurelia would ensure it's strength and survival by ANY means necessary. If Wayneright could defeat her, he would have proven the rumors wrong and Aurelia would be satisfied that Alistar hadn't gone soft and his husband could protect him.
It's a sadistic and cruel shittest, but in the end it comes from a place of practicality and maybe a little familial love.
I thought Aurelia was intentionally acting stupid to give Winny and Al a chance to beat her given she became an ally at the end of TPS. That her and Lillith made a plan to trap the Calypsos on Eden-6 in the manor and avenge Maya. She needed everyone in one place so the Calypsos had minimal chance of escaping. After all, she saw what happened to Jack. She would undoubtedly regret not killing him when she had the chance. With this convoluted plan she could have her cake and eat it too.
Partial or full ownership of Jakobs, a test of Waynewright's ability, torment Hammerlock and stop the Calypsos both because of Jack and she recognizes the danger they pose.
Alas, we just got Aurelia evil instead of something more interesting or complex.

Edit: I would have liked for the businesses Katagawa blew up being named after Tales characters. Like Sasha's smoothies and Fiona Fajitas. Hell, have a beatdown bar that Vaugn used to frequent whenever he visited Rhys! That way, Rhys's reaction to those places being destroyed goes deeper than a simple restaurant. It's the last remnants of his friends that he misses dearly. He's and Zero are still searching for Fiona and Sasha. Vaughn and Rhys could have had a falling out similar to Brick and Roland where either side went too far and the other left. Mabe if Rhys was becoming Full Jack, he now feels unworthy of Vaughn's friendship and is afraid he will hurt him as Jack did to Angel, hence no attempt at reconciliation. Atlas would be quietly helping the raiders, Rhys using his army to protect the vaults from people like the Calypsos. The reason he's getting overrun is that this vault is one of many his is protecting for the raiders and is thus spread thin, Rhys unwilling to force his employees to run through a Maliwan blockade just to save him.
Hell, have Loader-bot and Gorty working RND or being the "away team". BL3's story had so much squandered potential.

  5. I love this idea! Really wish BL3 had gone with ideas like these instead of what they chose to do… The calypsos just felt empty in game, and I thought Maliwan was a cool addition that should have been improved on more than it was. I just love the corporations.

  7. Wouldve been cool if the caylpsos where the villians for the first part of the game, have them have the partnership with maliwan but after killing the rampager and before maya can be killed maliwan ambushes the caylpsos kills them and then becomes the main antagonist for the rest of the game. Wouldve been a better twist than half the "twists" in the game.

  8. first minute and you praise borderlands for its "amazing story"? yeah no, the story is actually the weakest convoluted crap and no one in this franchise denies it except randy and the shillers, whats memorable and amazing about this franchise is the funny and whacky over the top characters in a whacky funny over the top universe and the guns/builds. but the story? HA things all over the place with plot points, characters, and concepts completely forgotten, killed, or ignored respectively.

  9. I wanna watch the video but the inconsistent audio is turning me off and that’s unfortunate. It goes from too quiet to too loud and overall is just low quality, with lots of clipping in certain sections. It’s not constant but I think your content would benefit highly if you evened out the audio issues. 🙂 I like your comedic style though, you definitely have a good angle.

  10. 55:19 before you start your rewrite i'm kinda sad you didn't bring up whats in the special features. specifically the extra called "Maya's funeral." THEY HAD A WHOLE OTHER FULLY VOICED AND STORY BOARDED SEQUENCE AND QUEST ON ATHENAS. HOLY SHIT IT CHANGES SO MUCH AND MAKES AVA A MORE LIKEABLE CHARACTER. its on youtube but id recommend watching it if you wana get angry.

  11. The segment nearing the 1 hour mark about the Calypso not showing more vulnerability is half right and wrong. Troy was the main one who showed more vulnerability and inner turmoil than Tyreen did. An example of this being the Eden-6 cutscene where he explains how Tyreen always was the “star of the show” while he was forced to watch, also realizing that he has now discovered a form of independency in being able to leech a Siren besides Tyreen. Another thing I might add was that when you were fighting through the Cathedral of The Twin Gods to get to his boss fight, he clearly became more aggressive and agitated, getting mad at Tyreen for coddling the cult too much when she’s telling them to kill the Vault Hunters. Also, the Echo audios (i forgot the official name) found near Leda’s (Tyreen and Troys mom and Typhon’s wife) grave showed how Tyreen was the main one who wanted to leave Nekrotafeyo to go on Pandora just like shown with every other Siren, while Troy hesitates and expresses how he doesn’t wish to leave their dad behind. Tyreen took advantage of the fact that he would’ve died if he didn’t leech power from her every now and then to not die to coarse him into rebuilding/repairing Typhon’s old ship to fly to Pandora.

(Also, I’m in love with troy calypso and wished he could’ve gotten a redemption arc or at least betrayed Tyreen and became final boss)
