  1. Never got the hate for this. I loved it back in 2004 and still do. Beautifully made with the reveal which recontextualises the story to address that fantasy many of us often have about running away from modern society and its many ills while also adopting many of the same bad things such as spreading fear and lies to try and control your population. Also Bryce Dallas Howard is fabulous here.

  2. I haven’t seen this in many years and rewatching it now has made me say that this is a fantastic film with such great themes that I really was a bit blind to before. Thank you for watching this!❤❤❤❤❤❤

  3. This film is right up there with those reality-controlled films that philosophy professors tell their students to watch, like; The Experiment, The Truman Show, The Adjustment Bureau, The Matrix, Dark City, Inception, Shutter Island, The Game, The Thirteenth Floor, Jacob's Ladder, Sublime, eXistenZ, City of Angels, The Butterfly Effect, The Saragossa Manuscript, Memento, Solaris, The Shinning, Black Swan, Side Effects.

  4. Shows the skills of a master like M Night Shayanlan where you know the monster is not real but it scares you shitless anyway cause of one line and a great soundtrack placement. This is someone in full control of his art. I love the back to back twist of you learn that none of this is real, then there's a monster in woods anyway and then the deception goes further as it's happening in modern day!

Also, to me living like they do is a perfect World. I would not change a thing except maybe have the technology that we have medicine-wise. Everybody should be living like this, in nature, going back to the essentials. I also think as bad as it sounds, that fear is an important element of holding a people together. This was a smart idea the Elders had.

  5. I love the premise of the elders, wanting to pretty much create an honest and good world. A World without sin or evil so to speak. Yet when you look at this, when you look at the elders and the world they created. If you pay attention, almost every deadly sin has worked its way into their supposed perfect Community. Almost every one. Wrath, Pride, vanity, lust, envy, they’re almost all there. Those sins have worked their way into their community without any external forces influencing them at all. I just found this film to be fascinating & on top of all that, I loved the music. This film’s score/soundtrack was amazing. I love this film.

  6. This came out when I was working in a movie theater. We had people walk out saying this movie sucked constantly. Once we had an entire theater booing and throwing crap at the screen. I've never seen anything like it.

This is pretty much the Amish way. They live without tech but don't live as isolated or with stories of horrifying creatures if they venture out into the woods. The young are allowed to have their Rumspringa where they travel out of the community and into the modern world to see which tye like best. Some return home to their Amish way of life, while others join the rest of the world.
