this video is so interesting to me bc i've loved the ragtime musical for a while. it's super nostalgic for me and has a lot of personal meaning, but i never knew the truth about evelyn's story. this video completely changes my point of view
Is this where potato head gets that line from
Ms. Nesbit should have called the Special Victims Unit.
Discovered your channel about 6 hours ago and have been watching your videos the whole time . I love the amount of detail and sensitivity you use with each topic, your content feels like a podcast with cool outfits and pictures i love it sm!!
Great popular-history videos! Well-written, well-researched, well-delivered!
I just discovered your channel and I am so impressed in your speaking and presentation ability. Flawless! I know this takes a lot of hard work, on top of the research. I’m just so impressed!
Evelyn truly deserved so much better. She had to suffer the brunt of condemnation from society that only cared about the court of public opinion. It was very obvious in the actual court that she had been seen as a pawn by the awful men she had been involved with. The public and press were vicious, attacking her character, despite her being a victim in her own right. She didn't deserve any of it; didn't deserve the treatment from White &/or Thaw, those in Evelyn's social circle, but especially the absolute vultures that worked as press. They're the ones who perpetuated the narrative of her being some sort of devil woman which caused the public to see her in that light as well. Just heartbreaking. It goes to show that there's some things that just don't change. Like the power of the press & the public's need for the details on public figures. Must just trying to ignore own woes.
This was horrible. Two childish, spoiled men abusing Evelyn and countless others without consequence, and a world that mythologised the very lies her abusers told themselves. Thank you Kaz, as always, for setting the record straight in such a human, truthful way…
Random Harry’s fact! Flamingo and Harry’s blades are interchangeable. Harry’s blades are fantastic on my face and Flamingo are great for my body.
The content of your videos is consistently excellent. May I suggest a topic? Marquesa Luisa cassati. She was in 19th century / early 20th century fashionista and Italian eccentric. She was known for her elaborate parties and at one point was considered the richest woman in Italy if not all of europe. She died penniless in London but is a continual influence to designers and Muse to poets
Awesome video Kaz! I really appreciate your humanization of Evelyn – something I often notice missing from other portraits of her. People have a tendency of portraying her as this calculating, mercurial woman who knew exactly what she was doing and "would do whatever it took to remain in the spotlight, even if it meant 'ruining' the lives of good men along the way", or you'd have the Ragtime musical's interpolation of her (I have not read the novel or seen the movie versions, but from what I've heard, she's more of a background character– in the book she's only mentioned by name, although I cannot speak to the accuracy of either); she is portrayed as an airheaded ditz, extremely flighty– as if you're meant to laugh at her and wonder how she is able to remember to breathe in order to stay alive. (Not surprisingly, there's often an undercurrent of misogyny to these depictions of Evelyn.)
we read about her in my psych serial killers class bc my prof is a descendant of thaw. super interesting and very sad case. i’ve been looking for a copy of her memoir but can’t find it.
♥️✨🍂☕️📚🎶📻🍁💫♥️
Poor Evelyn… That's heartbreaking. I hope bringing more attention to the real story does some justice to this poor woman.
When you said you are going to talk about her second assault, that's when I started tearing up.
Found you by accident. Subbed & Belled. Can we please get married now?
I read about Evelyn Nesbit a few months ago; such a tragic story.
Don’t you get it, you see the hat? I am mrs. Nesbit. ~Buzz Lightyear
“A fun secret society outside of mainstream propriety” sounds like a song haha
I’ve never heard any of this. It’s fascinating. Both men seem like groomers and abusers.
I always enjoy your video essays. Even through the disgust you have with some of the actual material, you can see the passion you have for the subject matter. Thank you and keep up the good work
I learned about this from toy story
Thank you for telling this story accurately. Like you said in the video so many retellings of this story don’t do justice to Evelyn Nesbit and continue the long tradition of blaming her for what happened to her. Finally people are telling her story the way it really happened.
GREAT VIDEO AHHH. The yt algorithm really doin good for once
Shout-out to Erik Satie for providing some of the soundtrack to this one! Gymnopedie is one of my favorite piano pieces to play
Does anyone know any other film about this case?
I think If people investigate maybe there's something between this obsession of Thaw over White 👀
Would you ever consider doing a video on The Tweed Ring and Thomas Nast? Loved this vid btw, your recount of the events here gripped me the whole way through.
God, this poor girl
This account sounds very like Tess of the Durbevilles.. heartbreaking
And folks, this is what feminism is for.
Is this story much different from all the modern day nightmare we hear from child stars who grew up in the movie industry now?
Next on the menu: kids doing family channels on you tube now.
Watch them sue all their parents in 15 years because is still no Coogan Law for them yet.
I'm kinda horrified by all of this
Well done and your arguments for your viewpoints are well supported. New subbie. Thank you for your time and work.
I see you have a copy of the book Ragtime behind you. That was turned into a Broadway musical with a song devoted to the trial of the century.
Okay… so this story just proved to me that I have NO sense of time 😂
It hurt to wrap ky head around the fact this person was born in the 1800’s and died in the 60’s. Great story! … aside from the terrible and disgusting things men did to her.
Poor Evelyn. Her life was absolutely traumatic and so few people knew the truth about her
I think it’s a really good example that’s you DO NOT sensationalize murders and other violent acts.
I love your videos so much that I think I binge watched them all in several days! Super interested in seeing anything you create 💓
These were two very sick men 😑
I accidentally disliked your video. I removed the dislike. Pay no mind.
Man I’m ngl this person is gorgeous 😭
I don't think a retelling of crime has ever made me as viscerally upset as this did…
