The Tragedy of the Deadliest Airshow Disaster Ever

The in-depth story of the Sknyliv air show disaster 2002, which was the singular deadliest airshow disaster in history:
A fighter jet roars out of a barrel roll so close to the ground that it clips a tree branch with its wing. Thousands of excited spectators watch on in disbelief. But inside the cockpit, the pilot screams “Where are the spectators?”

  1. should the pilot get some of the blame? Yes, should the pilot have gothen jail time? Yes but the amount of jail time and blame is way of for what would be propper there. the manouver was the wrong decision for sure but the higer up should face far worse consequences since their decisions in regard to regulation and safety is wrong. if i remember correctly the ukranien comand etc had a lot of problem with corruption and other things at the time (Changes started to occur in that regard afther the russian invasion of crimea and the sepratisem that russia suported.

  2. Poor maintenance + poor organisation + poor decision making from the pilot. Doomed from the start.
The raw video of immediate aftermath is the most horrendous thing I've ever seen

  3. Human life in this particular, part of the world (post–soviet Asia) has different value than in the Western Culture. We all assume that our ethical and moral standards, and the occupational and legal regulations, are the same everywhere in the world. No, This is a mistake to assume so.

  4. Similar to what happened at Ramstein in 1988, three of the Italian Tri-Colori team crashed, the solo #10 pilots plane dragged concertina wire (stainless steel razor wire) thru the crowd. It looked like you had thrown people into a blender filled with burning jet fuel. 70 dead, 650 injured.

  5. The airshow location was NOT in a war zone in 2002. The denial of practice time was completely financial due to the cost of fuel. Poor planning like the rest of the event.

  6. I cant even imagine making the harrowing decision to eject, knowing your plane will be unmanned and out of control. I really hope that pilot is doing okay now. He didnt deserve the punishment he received.

  7. The image of the aircraft, forever frozen in time, engines roaring, upright amongst the mass of spectators, is truly spectacular!

Oh that it was really forever frozen in time, rather than the hideous reality of what it so cruelly inflicted on those trusting, defenceless spectators!

An entirely foreseeable and preventable mass slaughter of innocent people…

  8. This breaks my heart. That pilot was just doing what he was told and tried to stop it, but his superiors were too arrogant – or desperate, I don't know which is worse – to ensure people were protected, the same people they were showing off for. If you put the people you're displaying this for come under threat, then what's the point anyways? And of course, no accountability. While that mid-air collision at Ramstein is still the most horrific thing I've ever witnessed from an air show, this comes as a close second.
