The Top 15 WORST Songs of 2023

2023 was a bad year man, Normally I wouldn’t come out of the gate so negative or cynical, I try to be more objective when reflecting on years past. But 2023 was terrible, terrible for pop culture, terrible for the news, terrible in my personal life. Like I can’t describe the feeling of excitement I got seeing the clock turn to 12, finally closing this mess of a chapter to all of our lives. Last year I did a video where I recapped all the TV I saw in 2022 and ranked all the new shows that debuted from the worst to the best and in that video I mentioned how the whole year felt very mediocre for most forms of entertainment, music included. For 2023 though, this was one of the first times where it felt like I, as a fan of pop culture and its discourse, had to play devils advocate for the medium rather than celebrate it. The bar for what passes these days is so low to the ground, a goddamn ant would have trouble limboing under it. From all the nonsensical sample uses, to the insufferable political anthems rallying up the wrong types of crowds, to the uninspired, hackneyed filler that crept its way into the zeitgeist, I have no trouble calling 2023 one of the worst years for music in a very, very long time. And I am not alone in that, there have already been several high profile outlets screaming the same thing out from the rooftops. The entire system was barely holding together, and in some corners completely collapsed on itself. Unless of course your name is Taylor Swift, in which case you had the best year ever. But for the rest of us simpletons, 2023 was a humiliating reminder that for every wholesome, warmhearted feeling we get, there’s a Jason Aldean lurking in the shadows just waiting to pounce. The system this year deserves a proper deep dive to see just what was the worst of the worst. And thankfully, y’all can sit back as I lead us through the shitstorm that was the 2023 music scene. Grab a snack, get cozy, and prepare to put your therapist on speed dial as we look through.
