  8. Death before dishonor! comes to mind. The ones mentioned by other commenters are cruder versions of this, but still valid. In WWII, either the British or the Americans had been hunkered down in a town, holding off the Germans. They were in desperate need of relief, or of permission to retreat. The Germans offered them safety if they surrendered, but then they got a message that relief was on the way, but would take a while to get there. In the meantime, they were to hold the town at all cost. These troops didn't have enough ammo or other supplies left to hold on, but when the Germans gave them the chance to surrender, their commanding officer said one word to the Germans, "Nuts!" For the record, they did manage to hold on until they could be relieved. Their doing so kept a large number of German troops tied down, preventing them from advancing farther, thereby greatly helping our side in the war. This true event was even included in a war movie. Not sure which one, but it may have been "The Longest Day" or "The Battle Of The Bulge."
