  1. Shame that critics rated it that low back then… but this also somehow seems to be typical for cult movies. They just get the appreciation they deserve much later, sometimes too late.

  2. You have no idea how glad I am that you mentioned the “The Things” story. The central conceit in that story of humanity being just as alien and horrific to the Thing as it is to us just adds a whole new perspective on whole plot of the movie that I just love.

  3. Yes finally someone who agrees that they are both human in the end. It's the most appropriate ending considering a major theme of the movie is paranoia. Having one "actually" be infected feels too standard.

  4. Glad to see you review one of my all-time favorites. I still call people I distrust “Palmer” to this very day.

I do disagree with your take that the movie’s story should be self contained. If you were to expand on the idea of the Thing for some kind of follow-up, the right way to evolve the story would be for it to escape from the Antarctic. If you think about it, humanity is incredibly lucky that the ship crashed into a snowy wasteland. Just imagine the sort of horrors it could have created had it simply landed in the ocean. It can replicate and living matter so the possibilities are endless. Just imagine a Thing shark or Thing whale. And think of what could happen if it reached the mainland. Not only could it assimilate apex predator animals but even plant life could be imitated. Imagine a forest where any tree could be a Thing.

  5. The Thing 2011 is what happens when studios have no idea who to market the movie for and your are right. Focus groups should not always dictate a movie.

I hope everyone sees it and honestly I hope the ending is never revealed because the ending is so good.

  6. One of my favorite films. The whole idea of some grotesque creature assimilating the people around you is truly terrifying. It takes Invasion of the Body Snatchers to another level, made worse by the fact everyone is trapped in a small building with nowhere to go.

  7. Fuuuuck dude, I never knew the prequel actually had potential! I rememeber watching it and thinking that it felt like it was made by someone who only kind of remembered the original. But it seems like there was genuine passion and love behind the scenes. The prequel was such an unnecessary idea to begin with but had they done the special effects practically like in the test footage it would've been entertaining and felt like an appropriate homage to the original. Now I'm sat with a big "what if?" over a very forgettable prequel.

  8. Fun fact about the chess robot. When Macready makes his final move on the board with his king and the computer with a rook, he’s not even in check to claim checkmate, the computer forces the loss for no reason hence why he calls the computer a “Cheating bitch.” Little bit of movie/chess trivia.

  9. This is an excellent breakdown on one of my favorite sci-fi films of all-time. I truly think the movie going audience just wasn't ready for a film of this caliber. You had two generations of movie goers who grew up watching films made under the Hays Code. I suspect that the nihilism present in true cosmic horror was just too much for the majority of Baby Boomers and the Greatest Generation to handle.

  10. First off I want to say I love the video but I will add this about the 2011 film which is nowhere near as bad as its reputation… Think about it this way this creature has been in ice for hundreds of thousands of years so it's never encountered a human before it would have no idea how to interact with them or what the nature of our species is it has to learn everything about us so maybe after killing the Norwegian base it knew better for the future

  11. YAY FINALLY!

    ALSO!
Friend Almighty you are a wonderful creator who deserves so much more recognition than you get, I still remember every second of going through the berserk saga as it came out during the toughest time in my life so far, and it helped me through everything. Your style of review and analysis mixed with your sarcasm makes some of the best vid os on this site

  12. The ending to The Thing, isn't ambiguous at all. Childs is the Thing and MacReady is getting ready to kill him.
1: The scene establishes MacReady as the viewpoint character.
2: MacReady sits near the flames.
3: Childs enters the scene and immediately mentions the high temperature.
4: Childs sits away from the flames.
5: MacReady's breath is visible, but Childs' isn't.

  13. when it come to writing a story, i alaways say that the most intelligent character can only be as intelligent as the script writer; and in the case of the thing; the writer cover all his bases; making the characters realy brain efficients; and it help that the cast know how to give some suptil acting diference between when they act as the characters and when they act as the monster acting like the characters.
the fx are still more than solid to this day.
    a good movie

  14. Horror, Action movies peaked in the 90s/80s. All my top movies of ALL time is from that era, Predator, Robocop, The Thing, Terminator 2, Rambo list just goes on and on. Just can't beat titles from that time. Now there has been good contenders in all the years since then that I do think match up to the stuff from back in that era of films. But god damn were they hitting it out the park very consistently back in those days.

  15. I love the idea that the Thing hates MacReady with a fucking passion, especially after the blood test. I also like the idea that neither Childs and MacReady were the Thing and it was successfully killed. But it left such a psychological scar on both survivors that neither of them will take their eyes off of each other until whenever rescue arrives out of sheer paranoia.

  16. Been watching this movie for 30+ years but your video still shed new light on the whole "I'm a pretty light sleeper, Childs!" line; you make a great point about the Thing shying away from leadership positions; previously I thought Norris' rejection of the idea was another way to sow dissent and distrust amongst the rest a-la Palmer's refusal to go with Windows–another great point you make, that he wasn't just trying to sow more dissent and distrust, he was trying to get Childs alone. Thank you SIR
