Ok so John Carpenters The Thing is one of my favourite films ever made. The movie stands as the gold standard for practical effects and ontop of this the film has an extremely well crafted story that still stands the test of time. Laced with paranoia the movie is meant to leave us constantly second guessing which characters are the thing and this extends to the ending itself. The movie closes out with Childs and MacReady warming themselves by the blazes of their base before cold creeps in and kills them.
For decades people have questioned where Childs is a Thing or not and for the first part of the video I wanna discuss why I think that he was. Now this is something I’ve gone back and forth over throughout the decades and initially I believed that Childs was one of the good guys. However there are two very important things that come at the end that I think spell it out that Childs is indeed an alien.
Now the first of these comes when we catch him watching over the base from the sidelines. Childs is instructed to keep an eye out and he stands in one of the rooms that lead to the outside. Later on we see that he’s abandoned this post and we get a look at the room which now has the door wide open. Now you might not notice this but the coats are on completely different hangers to what they were originally when we first saw Childs in the room. Placing these shots beside each other we can see that they’re all laid out in a completely different way.
In the movie we discover that The Thing rips through your clothes in order to kill you and my theory is that the creature ambushed Childs at this point and was then a struggle. This caused some of the coats to fall off the pegs and then in a hurry, the Thing grabbed one to wear and then put the others up so that it didn’t look like there’d be an attack.
Childs coat in this scene is navy blue and when he comes to meet Macready at the end it appears to be a creamy white colour.
Now this may be due to the snow and there’s been several people that have argued that the coat is blue, we just can’t see it.

There are a few possibilities. Childs is a thing, Childs is not a thing, a personal favorite of mine is that McCready somehow got infected and is a thing, or that they are both things and know they are and that is why Childs drinks and MaCready laughs. I like to think that they are both human and are accepting their fates as they won but they are both going to die in the end sadly.

I have to say the Norwegian man who got shot in the beginning couldn’t have been a thing because the prequel shows that he’s human trying to stop it

There is a little known written story from the perspective of the thing and how it thinks and how it learns and what it learns and that states childs is part of it

I might be on my own, but the pre-sequel that came out in 2011 was honestly pretty good as well.
Child's wasn't the thing. He was the Arbiter.
Everyone was infected according to the story that the movie was based on and the alien was the pilot in addition to it being a question of how infected each person is. The aliens were a communal creature of sorts that was able to adapt to almost any environment and the alien does infact think that it's helping humans though this is questionable because humans might be so adverse to a communal mind that it might destroy us.
This has always been one of my favourite movies ever made.
The Thing (part 2) was also excellent I thought.

I just wish we had storytelling like this today. Too much spectacle not enough substance in todays storytelling.

wasent the suspected character in question also Very germophobic because of it? he would NEVER have accepted a drink because he was would suspect the other man of being a thing himself and trying to infect him with the drink
because we have watched mcgreedy for the last parts of the film we KNOW he's not a thing; Childs would NOT know that so he would NOT lower his gaurd, but he would especially NOT accept a drink from him that might contaminate him
hence why mcgreedy laughed, he knew if he was human he would not accept the drink, he would instead be VEEEERY cautious of mcgreedy, if not outright try to kill him until he can prove he's human, but here he is, calm, accepting mcreedy's story and taking a drink that mcreedy already took a drink from
that dog was very well trained though, both the one that played the role of the dog-thing and the others, i wonder how much training and what kind of training they would need to teach the dogs "okay, now grab the fence of the kennel, braking and whining and rip a hole in it…good boooooy"

There's a comic book that continues the story. Read that and you'll find out
nobody cares, that's not the point of the ending

anybody can and probably will demonstrate McReady was the thing

If they were going to freeze to death at the end doesn't that mean the Thing won because eventually someone is going to come for their bodies and it can survive being frozen?
Childs isn't The Thing.
At this point there would be absolutely no need for The Thing to use subterfuge. In fact, other than revenge there would be no reason to return to Mac at all. It could just transform into a Husky and either hunker down awaiting someone coming by to investigate or go re-bury itself in ice.
Childs however WOULD come back to see what had happened.
Ugh no, Charles is not the thing! John Carpenter has debunked this theory and wanted to leave the ending ambiguous.

Idk I think it's McCready or neither. I really think neither. He never changed his clothes they are just dirty at the end

I always thought childs was the thing there was so much to point towards him but i guess we will never know
Child’s wasn’t the thing , because he would’ve torched Mac on the spot . Why put himself in danger with Mac and just go sleep in the snow for the rescue team to find it.
Child's is not the thing because of 1 simple minor detail… He is wearing his earing which was what was pointed out in the prequel.
If you've read the comics, they literally reveal that Child's is a thing.
There was an alternative ending for the tv version cut when it aired decades ago. At the end of the film a lone sled dog(the thing) looks back at the remains of the facility for a short moment, then runs out into the attic landscape. I believe that scene was cut from the theatrical cut due to definitively exposing either Mac or Childs as having been infected by the Thing. Alternatively it could have been a normal sled dog who hid out of sight from everyone at the camp. And when morning cane dipped the fuck out of dodge. I would like to believe that out of everyone and everyTHING that one lone dog was the survivor.
