In 1989, the NFL announced that the Green Bay Packers would be playing a home game against the San Francisco 49ers, and a road game against the Atlanta Falcons. And then, the NFL changed its mind and reversed course, completely changing the schedule after the opponents had already been announced. This is the story behind that controversy

i made a question in quora one time on how or why the nfl started the current interconference rotation the way they did it starting in 2002. In my opinion if I was reorganizing the interconference rotation I would've done it like this:
2002,2006,2010,2014,2018,2022
AFC East vs NFC East
(Patriots,Dolphins,Jets,Bills vs Eagles,Redskins,Giants,Cowboys)
AFC North vs NFC West (Steelers,Ravens,Browns,Bengals vs Rams,49ers,Seahawks,Cardinals)
AFC South vs NFC South (Titans,Colts,Jaguars,Texans vs Buccaneers,Saints,Falcons,Panthers)
AFC West vs NFC North (Raiders,Broncos,Chiefs,Chargers vs Bears,Packers,Vikings,Lions)
2003,2007,2011,2015,2019,2023
AFC East vs NFC North
(Jets,Patriots,Dolphins,Bills vs Packers,Vikings,Bears,Lions)
AFC North vs NFC South (Steelers,Browns,Ravens,Bengals vs Buccaneers,Falcons,Saints,Panthers)
AFC South vs NFC East (Titans,Colts,Jaguars,Texans vs Eagles,Giants,Redskins,Cowboys)
AFC West vs NFC West (Raiders,Broncos,Chargers,Chiefs vs 49ers,Rams,Seahawks,Cardinals)
2004,2008,2012,2016,2020
AFC East vs NFC South (Patriots,Dolphins,Bills,Jets vs Panthers,Saints,Buccaneers,Falcons)
AFC North vs NFC North (Ravens,Bengals,Steelers,Browns vs Packers,Vikings,Bears,Lions)
AFC South vs NFC West (Colts,Titans,Jaguars,Texans vs Rams,Seahawks,49ers,Cardinals)
AFC West vs NFC East (Chiefs,Broncos,Raiders,Chargers vs Eagles,Cowboys,Redskins,Giants)
2005,2009,2013,2017,2021
AFC East vs NFC West (Patriots,Jets,Bills,Dolphins vs Seahawks,Rams,Cardinals,49ers)
AFC North vs NFC East (Steelers,Ravens,Bengals,Browns vs Eagles,Giants,Cowboys,Redskins)
AFC South vs NFC North (Colts,Jaguars,Texans,Titans vs Packers,Vikings,Lions,Bears)
AFC West vs NFC South (Chargers,Broncos,Chiefs,Raiders vs Falcons,Saints,Panthers,Buccaneers)
Remember that video you made on hugh millen, collin? Well, he actually went toe to toe with majkowski in Milwaukee. A good backup, yes. A good starter, not even close
There was a time that Lions & Steelers didnt played each other in decades
I remember back in 2007 the original SNF opener not counting Saints/Colts was going to be Bears/Chargers but since NBC wanted Chargers/Patriots they decided to put Giants/Cowboys instead
I'd say the fact that we now have an odd number of regular season games and an odd number of teams in each conference going to the playoffs and an odd number of teams in each conference getting a playoff bye is…well…odd.
The schedule from 1:11 to 1:41, was that the Chicago Bears schedule for last year?
The Cowboys first seven matchups vs. the Buccaneers were at Texas Stadium. Only in the eight they traveled to Tampa Stadium in 1990 because in 1989 both teams were in the cellar of their divisions and played twice in 1990.
But they couldn’t move just one Packers away game against Dallas to Lambeau in the early 90s
I remember watching that game back in '89! Packers trailed the Falcons 21-6 late in the 3rd and came back to win it.
Then 2 years later Atlanta had a similar miracle finish in Atlanta.
Memories, man.
So how did they assemble the 1983 schedule given the 9 game 1982?
The 28 team league was better by 4 teams and 1 game per team.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about the Falcons-Packers game in 1981.
I remember the Cowboys having a long streak of playing the Lions in Detroit.

The manufactured drama of the NFL schedule release is so 21st century. A bunch of nothing, to draw clicks.
Gotta be real; as a Packer fan, I had no knowledge of this! I wasn’t around in 1989 (born in the 90s) and thus didn’t get to personally experience this, but I feel like I know quite a bit of Packers history [at least SB-era history (1960’s-today)], so this was a very informative piece, especially regarding schedule formulas during the more complicated era of the out of balance NFL, from AFL-NFL merger in 1970, to Houston Texans expansion in 2002 that brought the league to the sweet number of 32, allowing for all the divisions to be balanced at 4 teams apiece, and thus creating a far-less complicated scheduling formula for the entire league to follow! I doubt we’ll ever see a scheduling mishap like this ever again, and the only time we’ll see games moved/rescheduled will be if there’s a disaster of some sorts in a city, or… dare I say another 2020 situation (please god never ever again).
Regarding that 1989 season, that win over the 49ers I feel like is one of Green Bay’s greatest regular season wins, as that 1989 49ers team is arguably one of the greatest teams to ever win the Super Bowl after going 14-2, yet one of those 2 losses was the Green Bay game that got moved to San Francisco after the initial schedule release! For the Packers to go into Candlestick Park and get that win, especially considering the 49ers were 9-1 going into the game and fighting with the Giants for the #1 seed in the NFC, along with the Rams for the NFC West division (Rams were the other team to beat the 49ers that season), was really impressive! San Francisco went into that game as a -10.5 favorite on the Vegas betting lines, so huge favorites for an NFL game, but the Packers, a team that certainly wasn’t on the same level in talent as that 49ers team, was able to pull off what probably was 1989’s biggest upset! That win sparked a run by the Packers to make a playoff push, but unfortunately, despite posting their 1st double-digit win season since ‘72 at 10-6, they missed the playoffs to the Vikings in the division, and plus the NFC was loaded that year.
At least the 1989 Green Bay Packers had the greatest coach in team history in Lindy Infante, at least according to a phone in poll he was.
That '89 Packers team was awesome to watch. They were becoming the new Cardiac Kids of the NFC. Brent Fullwood was emerging as a great young running back and with Sterling Sharpe coming into the limelight as a Chris Berman favorite, they were in every game until the end.
Lindy Infante was a solid offensive strategist who basically became fed up with front office political bullshit that the Packers were going through at that time. This team and Holmgren's first team in 1992 had records that would have gotten them into the playoffs in today's NFL, but back then they were left out. Actually, it was a little unfair, because the teams that got into the playoffs ahead of them were pretty shitty and got beat handily in the first round.
I swear the same thing happened when the Packers and Cowboys met, it was a guaranteed loss during the Brett Favre era because the two teams always seemed to meet at Texas Stadium in Irving and the Packers rarely won there.
If II recall, the Packers in 1994 had a game with the Dolphins flip-flopped to where the Packers were the home team even though the schedule had them going to Miami for that year. Game was played in Milwaukee.
Buffalo played at Tampa Bay 8 times before they played at Buffalo. Bucs first game in Buffalo was 2009
From the merger in 1970 the Chiefs didnt play at Philadelphia until 1998. The last of the home and home matchups from the merger to occur
It was mentioned that last place teams in five team divisions played an 8-6-2 format rather than an 8-4-4 format. Well it looks like all teams in the four team divisions played 6-6-4 formats, even the last place teams. I looked up the schedules for the 1989 Bengals and 1989 Steelers, who were the respective first and last place teams in the 1988 AFC Central. It looks like they both played 6-6-4 formats in 1989.
