A documentary on the making of Super Mario World, the launch of the Super Nintendo, and how the game perfected the concepts of the Super Mario series.
00:00 – Introduction
01:48 – Part 1: The End of an Era
20:27 – Part 2: A Whole New World
43:16 – Part 3: Rumor Has It…

Early Super Mario World prototype footage and fan hacks are artistic renditions and do not represent an actual Nintendo product. For this video I used…

Norman, this is absolutely amazing and incredible!!! Wow! You bring back so many memories!
I'd love to see a video on Ultima Online
Super Metroid next. That game “changed the game”.
I got this game with the SNES on Christmas morning of 1992. My little brother wanted this game and the SNES, while I wanted the original NES and Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt (and eventually SMB2 and then SMB3), mostly because we used to rent the NES console with SMB/Duck Hunt from time to time, and it had nostalgia appeal for me). But my little brother swayed my parents to get the SNES and SMW, and I’m thankful he did, because this was an outstanding game. And even nearly three decades later, we still have it (or he does at his apartment).
Why is he Italian?
Great documentary! What a great job! Now for me, Super Mario 3 will be the best game ever created! I never really fell in love with Super Mario World. Up to this day, I often play SMB3 in my switch, both the original and the Mario Super Stars version with improved colors and graphics. Nintendo did a good job but I think somehow whenever I played it, it never felt the same.
Thanks for the video sir!
Very well done doc.
34:00 – Hey wait, that seems inacurate. SMB 2 has a tune on the opening screen.
okay what gave nintendo and sega the right to say how much their competitors sold? I would never have seen such childish behavior from such a big company.
How did this game top anyone’s lists? This game sucks. Most Super Nintendo games suck.
Good video.

It's bad when one thing becomes two. You should have stuck to telling the story of Super Mario World only. Now, if you want to make a documentary (maybe you have already) about the launch of the SNES, SMW being one of its launch game, you'd be threading the same topics again.
Just food for thoughts. I stopped mid-way because I felt like I was fist fed something that wasn't advertised just to watch what was advertised. Doesn't make your video bad, everyone loved it for a reason, just pointing out something that could be improved upon. Hopefully, you're one of these people who can have 1M subs and still take criticism. I just felt that you were wasting 50% of the video's length of my time. Maybe just update the title.
It always seemed strange to me that the game they used to show off the amazing new capabilities of the SNES didn't even do a very good job of it. The graphics mostly only used 8 colors when they could have used 16. I guess they really couldn't afford the extra memory.
Was today years old when I realized you could scroll the screen with the bumpers lol.
You can say what you like about Mario vs Sonic. But I don't think there has ever been a bad main Mario game. Sonic games on the other hand… ah about that!
I grew up after the snes but I did have this on gameboy advance and I absolutely put hundreds of hours in. I remember figuring out I could speed run the first level over and over to get the most extra life’s in a single level run. Turns out the game caps you at 999 extra lives.
You can see how things have changed since then, Nintendo couldn't stop EGM from releasing news that they clearly didn't want to release, there were no "embargo" or secrets to be held. Interesting times, and boy, Super Mario World…what a magnificent game, can't believe Famitsu scored it 34/40, lol.
Are you planing anything on the wonder known as Street Fighter 2?
I remember always playing this at Sam's club as a child…
well.. more like this then pls
I remember the first time I played super mario world. I was 14 and it was something different from anything else. It is a game that I use to play once in a while even today on the switch. The only game I think I will play for all my life. A part of me will always be 14 thanks to this game, and I think this is something priceless.
Thank you for the wonderful video, of course I subscribed to your channel. ❤️
Grazie.
GREAT VIDEO GAME
Awesome documentary and very detailed history. SMW was a big part of a lot of people's lives and favorite game. I thought it was great to hear about the success of all the members of the team that made the game.
Gaming Historian is the shit. It’s better than 95% of what’s on Netflix and Prime. And YouTube for that matter. Big ups.
Fascinating video!
My Teenage years coming to life. <3
42:15 – The Dragon Quest Composer was involved…so you know that shit was good 😎
Nah.
LGR has such a good voice for this stuff, couldn't miss it
Nice video. When is the next one ?
I love the SNES! I remember buying it when it came out. Still one of my favorite systems and love the games.
I remember when this came out and I was 12. Was out looking for pennies, selling my NES games, staying up obsessing over it, got my SNES with Mario World and Final Fight!. It was a magical experience, only way I can describe it. First time I played Mario World in a store, it blew my mind. Same with Final Fight, while not exactly like the arcade, close enough to satisfy my urge for Final Fight at home. Same with Turtles 4 when it came out. Had wanted the arcade experience at home and I got it. Eventually saved up for a Genesis as well, but although Sega touted the Genesis as the arcade experience at home, my teenage self didn't care about the arcade ports on the Genesis…I wanted Final Fight and Turtles In Time.
