Freelancer, Starlancer, Freespace 1 & 2, X-wing and Tie fighter games. It's criminal to not include the Wing Commander series. Then if you're including games like Space Invaders and Homeworld you HAVE to include some things like Master of Orion series, Space Empires, and Galactic Civilization. Why stop there? Is Mass Effect a "space game", if so it went a long way to popularizing the space theme to a modern audience. Or Halo, one of the most popular series of all time. But I'll accept just Freelancer.
Funny, played most of them. Started gaming on the C64 (then amiga and later PC). Agree with the list of the grandfathers of many of todays space games. Some personal favorites not listed over the years are Freespace 2, Wing commander. Looking forward to Homeword 3 most atm. If you haven't tried shipbreaker… give the game a spin – way more fun than the title would suggest (Same dev as hw3 even)
No Freelancer…?
Asteroids.
Why no one talk about Vendetta Online? For an old space mmo game, it's really good i have to say. Not too fancy but its fun and the lore also interesting.
FTL would have also been a nice add in the video since it combines strategy and rogue-like elements later found in everspace
The Xwing series brought us the power distribution system we use today in Elite Dangerous and StarCitizen. Can't believe you left that one out, or at least Tie Fighter. And the Xwing series took much of it's inspiration from the Wing Commander series, Star Citizen"s direct ancestor.
Starflight 1 & 2 I think were before Starcontrol 2 and really gave open world and colourful races a boost, not to mention an involving storyline.
"Updated in real time"
Sorta. SOME things in Elite Dangerous update immediately, other things update every 24 hours…ish.
Star Citizen is out of place in here Obsidian… its a Tech demo, not a game 🙂
Wing Commander and FreeSpace 1 and 2.
Except Star Citizen isn't persistent, constant wipes and errors.
As one of the games that started the home gaming revolution I would have included Asteroids.
What about Freespace 1 and 2?
I love Star Citizen but it's an absolute dumpster fire. The past week has been hell and that's putting it as nicely as I can the developer has a bit of an attitude towards the community. And sometimes retaliates when they feel cornered or attacked. Which is a true shame because they now have game testers that pay them Cloud Imperium games to test their game. Typically game testers are people who volunteer or paid knotless case of Star Citizen. This whole entire week was Invictus week that's a free fly weak showcasing all the current ships and vehicles in Star Citizen. Holyshit the game has crashed anywhere between 5 to 25 minutes after you start playing. Due to a game breaking bug called a 30k when Invictus week started I had 5 million credits in the bank today I have less than 2 million. Due to the fact that every time you crash out of the game you have to claim your ship which normally wasn't a big deal it was fairly inexpensive to do so but the developer has now increased the time it takes for your ship to be delivered and three times the price to claim that ship. Yes you've heard that right I spent over two million just cleaning my ship from a stupid bug that the developer refuses to fix.
No Star Fox? game was one of the earliest 3d games on home consoles, on the SNES no less, not to mention 64's additions with the rumble pack and actual voice acting which, again, was quite revolutionary for the time
I'm glad you mentioned the late 70s. So nostalgic and that was about the start of my gaming! I feel old 😂
I grew up playing Star Glider 2, that's why I love space games.
Mass Effect series made me fall in love with space.
Great nostalgic video, but where is Spacewar?
How can you not include Orbiter into this list is beyond me, frankly speaking.
A very important space game for me used to be Galaxy on Fire 2 HD. i played it on my Ipod like 10 years back. a freelancer game. I would love it in VR
Why is not Wing Commander in this list? It has direct influence on so many of the current games that are on the market and in development so much so that it was the precursor and direct narrative influence on at least one of the games you list.
I am positively delighted that you included Star Control 2. That game has a very special place in my heart and did so many things right.
No mention of Warhead from 1989
pfft
also the first Wing Commander????
For me, freelancer got me into the genre. I remember spending more time playing the demo than with full games I had at the time. The online community kept me hooked, especially the community driven servers and mods. I think people still play freelancer online to this day. Those were good years.
Well. I know you want to limit the list, but not mentioning Wing Commander is a big issue of that video.
You kind of missed the entire wing commander series, and Descent series. Both of which were so popular that they were released on more platforms than any other title you listed listed in your video including multiple consoles and with several remasters.
Elite Dangerous shouldn't be there and Starsector absolutely should be there.
I was born in 78. And I grew up loving scifi thanks to games and movies like Starwars.
