The Seventh Generation: Trends, Troubles, and Pure Garbage

Yet again, I lean a little towards ranting with this one, but I’ve found myself thinking back to the seventh generation of consoles (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360), and how utterly infested it was with weird trends, outsourcing, and in some cases, stagnation. While also being one of experimentation, this period produced some real stinkers, even in spite of all the classics that eventually emerged.

  1. I disagree with the "anti Japanese sentiment" theory. I think it's an era of the reviewers, in the words of The Critical Drinker, "political activists…I mean, games journalists", and how that type of person fits in a pretty specific box, which includes characteristics like no self-awareness or self-critique, so not only do they not learn from their own mistakes, but they fail to see the existence of their own mistakes. I think they are personally too stupid and therefore unable to appreciate a hard, silly and "offensive" game like God Hand.

  2. The Kinect is a pretty funny device in retrospect. While it was a failure in the gaming space it was made for, it was (and probably still is) huge in tech research, and it wasn't uncommon to see Xboxes in Defense research departments. Notably, smartphones with facial recognition are essentially using a miniaturised Kinect to do it.

  3. 7th Generation was amazing. Wii, 360 and PS3 all competed against eachother. 8th Generation was trash, it was soley the PS4 carrying things because the XBO and Wii U did not have that much content.
