If you look at the worldโ€™s most valuable companies, you wonโ€™t be surprised to find the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and Google. But one name does stand out: Tencent. The company is worth more than the likes of Facebook, Mastercard, and Samsung, and yet if you asked the majority of people what Tencent does, youโ€™d be met with a confused look. The truth, is that Tencent does everything. Because whilst Tecentโ€™s mascot is a friendly-looking penguin โ€“ a more accurate animal to embody this conglomerate would be a giant octopus, with tentacles reaching into almost every industry you can think of, all over the world. Whether you realize it or not, you almost certainly use products or services Tencent is involved with.

However in Tencentโ€™s home country of China, itโ€™s a very different story; everyone is aware that Tencent dominates their lives. And thatโ€™s because in China, Tencent has achieved the seemingly impossible: one app to rule them all. Tencent created an app called WeChat thatโ€™s been dubbed โ€˜the everything appโ€™ because almost all of Chinaโ€™s 1.4 billion population use this app for an average of 4 hours every day, more than the average American user spends on all social media apps combined.

And the reason people in China use WeChat so much is because itโ€™s basically every app you can think of rolled into one. Its essentially Facebook, PayPal, Whatsapp, Netflix, Google, Spotify, Uber, Yelp, Tinder, Zoom, YouTube, Deliveroo, Amazon and lots lots more all in one single app. You pay your bills through it, call your friends through it, and essentially live your entire life through it. However one single company having access to literally all your data โ€“ from your exact location to your entire bank history to every message and call and search youโ€™ve ever made โ€“ itโ€™s a lot. And then it gets worse when you realize that the line between where Tencent ends and the Chinese government begins, is blurry. Meaning, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has access to all that information as well, making WeChat one of the most powerful surveillance tools ever.

Plus, private messages and images that are sent through Tencentโ€™s apps like WeChat are scanned to see if they need to be censored โ€“ if you say anything the Chinese government doesnโ€™t want you to, you could end up in jail, or disappear. The Chinese government has even openly confirmed that it can access deleted WeChat conversations.

Tencent has used its vast wealth and resources to expand into many industries. They are also the largest gaming company in the world โ€“ with revenue significantly higher than any competitor. Gaming is just one of countless different industries Tencent operates in. Also Tencentโ€™s Payments division is nearly as big as PayPalโ€™s entire business. And its reported WeChatPay generates over 1 billion payment transactions per day โ€“ more than Visa and Mastercard. But itโ€™s only recently that the West has started to realise the influence Tencent โ€“ and thus China โ€“ actually haveโ€ฆ In this business documentary, weโ€™ll answer questions like: What is Tencent? What does Tencent do? How did Tencent and other Chinese businesses get so big?

  1. This project has consumed my life for the last few months ๐Ÿ˜‚ But hopefully youโ€™re gonna enjoy this one, as I really think Tencent is such a fascinating business – itโ€™s one of the worldโ€™s most valuable and influential companies, and yet most people know very little about itโ€ฆ

Tencent is often surrounded by controversy – including extreme surveillance, censorship, and brutally cloning & crushing competitors. And many people are concerned by just how many companies Tencent is now involved with.

And yet in many ways, this is also an incredible success storyโ€ฆ Tencent went from having only $1000 in their bank account & being on the edge of bankruptcy, to becoming a gigantic global empire & creating โ€˜the everything appโ€™ that Chinese people live their entire lives through.

Thereโ€™s a lot to cover here, so get comfy, and join me on this journey through Tencentโ€™s crazy history. ๐Ÿ™‚

P.S. Ideally watch with headphones and on a laptop / TV if possible. Enjoy!

  2. Its the American name and the cross logo for me most big American companies moved to China like 10 years ago i think. This is why they were all stepping down around the time of covid. They waited what 5-6 years to bankrupt themselves in America and then we been locked down or dealing with this covid another like what 3-4 years this was al like a reset like a virtual reset they have control over the internet just like they did Hollywood. Now they dont need Hollywood so they can throw it under the bus. Thatโ€™s why your hearing about all the shady shit happening in Hollywood. Its church lol all the way down to the ten percent tithe name. Thatโ€™s scary you got the Vatican in your pocket religion based. Scary

  3. Very informative. Video clips/pics from movies such as "The Big Short" and "The Social Network" (short enough to fall into the YouTube fair use policy) make it fun to watch.

  4. Rolling Stone Magazine revealed this information 3 YEARS AGO. If more people read books these YouTube videos wouldn't see so shocking and surprising. We would have more time to act on the evil of the world BEFORE it became a problem.

  6. So the Chinese government just sat back letting the company grow then swooping in to take over after years of investing using tencent to rig it in there investments favour that's why the owner let it loose money, probably didn't want the government to take over and use it as a surveillance tool.

  7. "Incredible success story" Yea I'd probably be an "incredible success story" if I stole other peoples money makers and made it mine. LMFAO For real?๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚
And then making enough money to do it the "legal way" by buying up enough shares to own the company. (Not that you NEED to do it the "legal way" in China).
But that works out pretty well for them in the west doesn't it…๐Ÿคก

  8. They absolutely ruined this boy's life and paraded his irreversible destruction for a mass audience. It's sickening. I pray he gets the help he needs and away from his sicko mother.

  9. 59:26 the sculpture thingy (more like a sign here) in front of Tencent's building literally says "follow our party (Chinese Communist Party's logo can be been big and above this slogan), start your business". And if this doesn't make you think twice about using any services Tencent launches… you must be either fan of Putin/Xi or you are locked up in Xingjian.
