A timeless treasure, nearly lost forever. Without the UNESCO‘s unprecedented rescue operation, future generations might have only seen the stunning temples of Ramses II and Cleopatra in the pages of history books.
Majestic stone colossi rising from the desert sands, structures like these kept their secrets for generations. For centuries, Abu Simbel, Dendur, Amada and other monuments faced threats from looters, earthquakes, and floods. Ultimately, it was the waters of the Aswan Dam that nearly sealed their fate.
In 1960, then Egyptian President Nasser ordered the dam‘s construction. In order to save the temples of Ramses II and Cleopatra, among others, UNESCO reached out to over 50 countries, and raised $80 million. After receiving multiple proposals to save the structure, it was one from Sweden that proved successful. The plan: dismantling the complex and rebuilding it on higher ground.
Between November 1963 and September 1968, saws were used to cut the two temples into 1,036 blocks, each weighing between seven and 30 tons. Their new location was 64 meters above the old site and 180 meters further inland. After five years of construction, this major undertaking was completed on September 22, 1968. The Nubian temples of Abu Simbel are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I love ancient history/archeology.lovely vid.. keep up the good work 🤩😊
egypt and iran really is fascinating and center point of human civilization and full of mysteries
The ancients built monuments while the moderns create plastic oceans and craters in the land 🤦♂️
Abu Simbel was the target. Nubian ancient heritage gone forever.
No slave in Egypt all were dark and brown people….
one has to wonder if the pharaohs who had these places built in celebration of their
self-proclaimed majesty, would have been at all surprised when some future
pharaonic sort destroyed them?
they were in the regular habit of defacing the monuments of their predecessors,
or co-opting them to their own uses.
if the dam technology of 1960 CE had existed in 1960 BCE, I think not.
we are lucky that there were people who cared enough to mount such ambitious undertakings.
we would all be the poorer, if they had not.
it is somewhat ironic that the Aswan dam could soon be redundant, if Sudan has its way.
Wow. This is so mind-blowing. I've never heard of any of this before. Would make such a great movie or Netflix series. I'm sure there was a LOT of drama… accidents… deaths… intrigues… etc. Such an amazing piece of our global history that remains largely untold / unknown today. It's always so fascinating and curious that the same humans that will go to war with each other and murder each other and poison gas and bomb each other–are the same humans that will come together from all corners of the earth to save priceless historic relics like these. Such a strange contradiction we humans are.
Proud to be Egyptian. Thanks DW for this fantastic work. Thanks to the West for saving our humankind heritage 🙏❤️
To bring things from African to Egypt 😂😂😂 where is Egypt???mumu people
This is a lie.
Undoubtedly wrong. The great sphinx has water erosion that cannot be explained if the 6000 year old date it correct. The Aswan Quarry is hundreds of miles from the pyramids, which is where the thousands of tons of granite was mined and transported from. You wanna tell me how stone balls and bronze chisels made precision cuts with the degree of accuracy achieved. How accurate? No mortar was needed for construction. Try that with imprecise methods 😂. Want more proof? Check out the thousands of examples of pottery. Precision carved pottery with dimensions that are IMPOSSIBLE to achieve with primitive methods. Y’all should check out Graham Hancock and the research he has done. Accredited SCIENTIFIC research that the main stream media don’t wanna admit it legit. It’s not my story. Im simply spreading the truth. We have been lied to for FAR TOO LONG!!!
Wow amazing!
Thank you DW for this excellent documentary ❤️.I just love ancient Egypt and Iam very much fascinated by its rich history.Visiting Egypt is a must for me.
Time well spent, another fantastic documentary. TY
to be fair, egypt worries are valid. They dont trust the the west, europe because they looted egypts treasure.. but if its not looted it will just be destroyed because egypt dont know its value dont even know how important pieces of world history. But to lean on russia didnt even help either and its worst. Policy woulve save it.
wow 😶😶😶
Egypt ancient Egypt is extremely fascinating for me. A very impressive documentary, Thanks ❤️
The pharaohs did not build the pyramids. I cant understand how its not possible for normal folks to see that there were multiple time periods and people in Egypt?!! There is clear undeniable evidence for high ancient technology, any engineer who actually takes a look at the evidence is able to see that. So the real question is, what happened to the ancient Egyptians? The dynastic people found the pyramids and other ancient structures and reused them. The Sphinx is also clearly older than 12000 years! Clear evidence of rainfall erosion! People need to stop listening to Egyptologists and educate themselves.
Thanks for the documentary. can I have the written script?
Hmm these people,,,,The caravans from Africa to Egypt is more like saying the caravans from Europe to Sweden,, am confused please i need help with this.,,
Just watched a documentary on Egypt that mentioned the work of moving this colossal temples, but not in detail. And now this? Thanks DW
Very interesting, so glad these important pieces of history were saved.
Super. Unfortunately, when we visited Egypt, we had to cut our holiday short. We (dog and me) took ill from the heat, climate, dehydration, etc….
But Egypt has been colonized by England?
Is it?

Thanks for sharing the wonderful documentary-from relaxing music channel friend in UK ❤️💚🎹❤️
Almost all ancient Egyptian landmarks including the pyramids were built by slaves 10s of 1,000s of slaves who toiled for years and died in the process. Should the Egyptians pay reparations.
this is a great example of what is possible if we work together
Quite an interesting watch this was
What are environmental consequences of the dam under current climate conditions
Nassar. The gift to archeology.
German racist stupidity!
Is Egypt not part of Africa?
Why are Europeans so stupid as to want to always corrupt narratives to belittle black people?
May one wish in life is to tour Egypt and witness all this history first hand. Great documentary. Rarely do humans put aside their differences and come together for the good of them all. So, this is a rare celebration of our common humanity
Can the French and Italian engineers. Build the jupa and shabella rivers a rasorvers to store water during the flood season for somalia so they can feed themselves by growing crops. Because right now millions are hungry because of global warming. So if the French and Italian engineers can build the juba and shabella river system somalia would be grateful to them. There would be peace and stability in the horn of Africa because people would not be starving anymore.
An excellent job greetings from Pakistan
Christian Leblanc looks like Khadaffi….
The Egyptians say they did not build the Pyramids but inherited them as a legacy. Check your facts
I appreciate all that was done to preserve. But, that will never be the same temple, as it was dissembled, moved, and reassembled…. It is no different than a modern museum showcasing ancient Egypt. Again, it looks beautiful and they done an amazing job saving the art work.
It is kinda like stonehenge, after I watched the footage of it being dismantled and reassembled, I no longer want to visit, it's just not the same after modern man breaks old things apart and rebuilds again.
EDIT: It made me smile though, when I think of all the people who dream up wild theories about things, and locations, They line this temple up with magical grids and such… meanwhile… it has been moved from original spot lololol
The indifference of modern Egypt to the legacy of ancient Egypt exists for a purpose.
I remember seeing a National Geographic article about the relocation of Ambel Simbel when I was a child. About 15 years ago I was about to visit the site on a five month backpacking trip from Cairo to Cape Town. I’m glad they saved it. I was totally amazed when I visited for sunrise.
@9:25 I don't interpret this as the Europeans/West "rescuing" Egypt's antiquities, as much as I see this as them seizing the opportunity to manipulate a situation so that they could take antiquities while making it look like they were "saving" Egypt's history. Of course, this meant that they could take these antiquities to their respective country's museums so that they could financially benefit from tourism. Now they claim this is the world's heritage, but do they say the same things if another country wants to take their country's antiquities? No, they don't. Then it is their cultural heritage.
Why build a dam in the middle of the desert and destroy 75% of so called history??? Makes zero sense for people/officials who pretended they were trying to preserve it. Must be a reason so many were built here in America. We have about 91,000 dams around the country which are on the brink of failure since they were never maintained on a routine basis with 50 year life spans… smdh Officials busy fixing other things other than the real problems at hand
Thisn8s the beginning of Rothchild and the guy community to capture Mouslims around the world and divide into portions. The climate change caused by Rothchild guy community and face serious earthquackes.
