If you’re a long time Build Show fan, you definitely remember the Real Remodel: Matt’s attempt to buy and flip a home for his family that didn’t exactly go as planned. In this series we will take a deep dive into all the twists and turns that came with that project and examine what Matt learned from the experience. As builders, tradespeople, and human beings, we all make mistakes and in this series, we hope that you can learn from some of ours so that we, as a community, can know better and build better!

Matt, I've been watching you for years… You're a standup guy – it really shows in this vid.
What's really sad is there are millions of homes like this (maybe not to that level but in various degrees) that sell for the price of a new home because of things like comparables, number of beds/baths, sqft, etc. Most buyers if they realized they were in a similar situation would need to live in that home 20 years to get their money out of that remodel. It blows my mind how over valued used homes are compared to new
Anyone proposing a flat roof to me gets shown the door, with a firm, 'do not call me, I wont call you'.
Matt, rats or squirrels, equals dozer bait.
Best wishes from the far North.
I remember this. Real life rental remodel turned into a complete gut job family home. Classic!
Great video!
Love that you’re doing a recap on your rebuild! I followed along years ago and appreciate the additional details you’re sharing now. Hope your family enjoys the new place for many, many years to come.
Brilliant. I loved the way that process started. Bring on the rats.
This is /was a great series when meetkevin brought it up—That’s how I found this channel way back.
Stayed for the gems,Matt. 👊👊
Great learning experience. Thanks for sharing.
Except I was looking to see what you started out talking about …
Buying anything without due diligence shows that the hubris of success got to Matt. But reality checked him, and he's here admitting it, AGAIN, on a new version of the story. That's brave, and educational for us, and I really look forward to seeing this story told again. Thanks for leading by example. Keep up the good work, Matt and team!
This has happened to me and brings back memories.
I saw one if your trucks today. It wasn't you but one of your guys. He parked at the Circle K and went inside. Nothing to report it just served to remind me that you're an Austin company.
The '"depth of crappiness"😆I've seen some of that with a house I renovated.
lol that was hilarious! Middle Class American budget to record scratch 😉 Nice edit!
There is no way the previous owners didn’t hear (let alone the smell) those rats crawling around, chewing on everything in that house all day for all those years.
Absolutely disgusting!!!!!!!
Hard to believe the previous owners lived like that, ignoring it, but they did.
No doubt you way over paid for that house. You got so lucky that the housing market skyrocketed with mass inflation.
I cant believe he bought a house for 440k without a proper nspection but boy he did fix the issue really well with his new home.
Man, thank you! My mother-in-law has a saying: Sometimes we have to go a long way to cover short distance.
More than once have I gone into a project with one idea to which I was committed only to get into it and realize it could never with that way. Letting go of that first idea though is hard! We need our trusted partners sometimes to point out the obvious and help us get “right in the head”.
Thank you for there transparency; it’s good to know we all go through these moments.
Remodel or Renovate?
How to remodel a house on a budget:
Step 1: Tear it down to the slab.
Step 2: Get a bunch of sponsors.
