"Probes" should have the ability to be sentient given the technological advancement they should have. They should be sentient immortal "machines", with abilities beyond our comprehension. Which is what they appear to be from data and reports of what we should presume to be highly credible sources.

Here's my theory. They're species is millions of years old. And so advanced that they've tried every scientific possiblity. They've modified themselves to the point that they are functionally immortal. Which lead them to lose their reproductive organs. And that's exactly why they are here now. Because they'd like to go back to reproducing the old natural way

Well, it sounds like the aliens have contacted us already and have been here for thousands of years, but our governments of the world conspired to keep it secret so we are easier to control.
