  1. on your thought at 21:00: i don't think that will be the case necessarily. with psychopaths, it is less about stupidity, but impulsivity. even the 'smart' people who kill are highly impulsive and narcissistic. they will likely have lapses of judgement or lack of care for planning in these moments, so they will almost always slip up. i tend to think that most serial killers do indeed get caught.

  2. While going to the police after escaping human trafficking seems like a no-brainer, you have to remember that the amount of trauma that comes with being a survivor of that is incredibly high, not to mention the fear that the police could be in on it or be paid off by the traffickers or if they have high-end "clients" with a lot of power. The idea of going to the police by these survivors could be equivalent to suicide or being recaptured. It can be easy to understand why many wouldn't come forward.

  3. Simon, I have watched many of your channels for years now. And never, in all that time, have I been prouder of that decision than when you refused to read that quote from a child predator.

Screw that guy – the sooner he is completely forgotten the better.

    Bravo Simon!!!

  4. I was a little girl growing up in Southern California in the years of the Hillside Stranglers & the Nightstalker & the Dating Game Killer & the Golden State Killer. It was a petrifying situation & even though I'm against capital punishment, if I could go back in time & kill Buono & Bianchi, I ABSOLUTELY would.

  6. Russian serial killer Serhiy Tkach violently killed some 37 women and girls, married and had a child with a woman in her early 20s while he was in prison by way of conjugal visits in Ukraine. They had their little apartment for when the visits would take place.

  7. No Simon, you are not inane. I think. If I'm not mistaken I believe the defence would have to prove that her mental state/disorder caused her to be incapable of distinguishing right from wrong. This would have been difficult. Not saying she wouldn't have benefitted from psychiatric and psychological assessment and treatment though.

  8. Re: why the judge didn't allow the jury to hear about Buono's other crimes… There's this concept in American law called a Molineaux hearing. Basically, you have a hearing with a judge to determine if evidence of prior bad acts that they haven't been charged with can be submitted in court as evidence for the crime they're currently on trial for.

Usually, the prosecutors want them to be evidence because they can provide a motive or an MO and show that the accused did similar crimes and has a pattern of behavior. However, the defense argues that introducing evidence of past crimes unfairly biases the jury against the accused, especially because the accused was not convicted of the crimes introduced. That can be and often is a grounds for appeal later on down the line (as in the original case, where Molineaux ended up essentially getting away with 2 murders!). So, while it does make the prosecution's case harder, the judge was being extra careful here and making sure any conviction of that scum would be air tight.

  9. I have to pump the brakes and respond to the commentary Simon had in regards to the security guard work and higher than average IQ, as I'm a janitor and regularly score in the 130's. It's not necessarily the complexity of the job that can make someone happy to be there, it might be the autonomy it affords, or even just the routine.

thank you david… that was a rollercoaster ride with a lot of freaky philias, taking into account that mental health wasn't fully explored in that time compared to now. i believe sentencing compton could have some form of leniency given her past trauma and drug addiction is a valid mental illness (in the present) and should still be considered in the review of these cases
