I just looked the Clayton Tunnel crash up on Wikipedia because I wanted to know exactly what signalling error caused this. Wikipedia states an automatic signal failed to return to danger! Automatic signal in 1861??? I don't think so… more likely, the wire had snapped. Accidents with snapped wires that kept signals showing "off" eventually led to the failsafe method, ie in case of the wire snapping the signal would return to danger. This method is still used today – in case of any fault, the signal returns to danger.
That's an interesting story and what a unique building this is, this tunnel that's also a castle and a house. No wonder the ghosts like it there and that this inspired Charles Dickens' "The Signalman".
"The Signalman" is by the way an incredibly accurate description of the life of early signalmen (now called signallers). There were far less safety devices than there were during later Victorian times (all were the results of tragedies), and without even a telephone connection to the adjoining signal boxes it would have been extremely lonely indeed. Early signalmen had by the way far more bell signals than later on due to the lack of a phone connection.
This has been a very interesting month with all the ghost stories of the railways – thank you very much! We railway folks know how haunted it is on the rails, most of us can tell a few stories. The railways are over 200 years old now (in England anyway) so this is hardly surprising…
I got so used to waking up and watching the new ghost story that I was confused for a bit this morning when there was none, then I realized there wasn’t because Halloween was over.
I was disappointed with the lack of spooktober spirit this year. But I would like to thank you for being one of the highlights of my spooktober. All the halloween stories you told this month were fantastic.
Now give yourself a good break, you deserve one with all the good content you pumped out recently
1:52 Maybe because: Its a freaking castle house built on top of an active railway tunnel! Of course you will hear bare metal wheels scraping and shreaking on top of metal rails!🤣🤣
The inspiration for 'The Signal-Man' – great way to end the spooky month!
That's a really neat design. Imagine it was none too quiet living there, rural or not, but the area certainly has a nice view.
And so, the Ghost train of thought reached its final destination.
great ghost story 👍👻😲
A playlist of the entire series, enjoy https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8LYDi4Z5vveodhMcqaA9E_wzB6YXSAHu
Happy Halloween everyone! Great vid to wake up to
How cool would it be to live over a train tunnel? Though personally, I'd rather live some place a little less haunted.
that would be epic to live in
I think this the most ghosts he's told us about, and I think that this is the best last halloween video.
This has been a great series, hoping you do it again next year!
Just one more day until the demons day!
You did one of these every October day, I tip my hat to you sir.
🎃 Happy 🎃 Halloween 🎃
I want to live there
Never knew this of all tunnels is haunted!
What saddens me is that this will be the LAST episode. I enjoyed this theme VERY much, and I am impressed by your commitment to it!🥲
It looks kinda like Tidmouth Tunnel
I remmeber travelling through this tunnel on Thameslink CityFlyer Class 319's when I was very younfg as well.
Very unusual for a tunnel to be in a shape of a castle, well done for Charles Dickens to a novel out of this ghost story.
Naw, I'm getting the f*ck out of there.

Unique for it's appearance?
Someone has forgoteen about Clay Cross tunnel.
Continuing my favorite game of guessing the music used in these videos. And sadly I know this one… End credits of Trivia Murder Party 1. I'm a nerd! 😝
Who would have thought railways would be such spooky places. Loved these – thanks for doing them.

Thank you for putting out so many videos this month. I loved every single one of them.
It's almost Thanksgiving do not forget Thanksgiving or else
The cottage has a basement? You wouldn’t want to start digging there…

that's it for the spooky stuff I guess. Very well done
Ghosts or not I`d happily live there.
Ok, now do the Irish one
Wait… That house has a basement? Maybe it's a ghost basement forever suspended in the tunnel… Why am I suddenly reminded of Pee Wee's Big Adventure?
Did the old lady also have a dog named courage?
The ghosts are people in purgatory
The 'signalling error' was the time interval system of despatching trains.
Also make it a hydropower plant
I wonder if ghosts are conscious or just images, like recordings of past events that are played under certain conditions.
Railtrack only have access from the south portal – useless fact

2:54 Maybe this happened because: Freaking trains in tunnels can vibrate your house if the terrain surrounding it is rigid!
@ 1:15 – “the rear coach was decimated”.
What, only 10 per cent of the coach was destroyed?
