1. The "cowboy chess player" guy was on the cover of that magazine that Beth shoplifted. The actor is known for Love Actually, Game of Thrones, and The Maze Runner. He has always looked a lot younger than he actually is. I think this is his first role where he's played an adult. Still looks younger though (as you caught).

   A "Gibson" is a Martini except garnished with a pickled baby onion instead of the standard pickled green olive.

   So many people get the Townes/Beth/Roger scene wrong, looking at it from what he wanted instead of what she wanted. I think you nailed it. She wanted it to go further, not sure what his deal was. And was Townes with Roger? There was only one bed in that room…

   I like to think that Manuel showed Alma a lovely time in Mexico. If that was my last week alive, I'd be really happy. Not that he knew that, but still he gave her a great vacation in a few days. Especially compared to her entire marriage.

   Borgov was accompanied by KGB bodyguards because back then it wasn't uncommon for famous Russians to seek to defect whenever they were allowed out of the country. Chess players and ballet dancers (Nuryev, Baryshnikov) were especially at risk.

   Harry didn't study her every game because he loves chess. Or call her as soon as he got into town… Beth isn't really into Harry, she just doesn't want to be alone.

   "Oh and about sex..? Forget it" Such a boss line.

2. Chess used to be bigger. Very competitive. Even when I was a kid in the 80s it was still something people low key cared about. I think part of the passion in the mid 20th century was that it was kind of a national thing, the way soccer is now. US v. USSR

3. Kinda random , but Jenna Ortega killed it as Wednesday Addams in the new series. I actually think Anya Taylor-joy could kill that role too. She has those big rare eyes , and could totally give that deadpan , pokerface look that Wednesday gives. I think she could hit her dark dull personality too

8. I'm really, really enjoying these reactions to great shows. I get to see so many great moments and someone else genuinely absolutely love it, the Queens Gambit is so good and your reactions are amazing haha. I was gutted the last one wasn't out yet haha, now I feel like I'm watching a series that comes out once a week. Love the content, keep it up, so wholesome and awesome 🙂

11. Anya is beautiful and has gorgeous skin. But it's not flawless. As with most movies and TV shows nowadays, the faces of the stars are digitally "corrected" to remove any blemishes the actor or director doesn't want. Part of the appeal of this movie is its super-clean, solid pop-to-mod geometric looks. Anya's face and figure are literally built for this aesthetic. Her sculpted hair and the solid-color wardrobe (she wears few prints except when she is transitioning to a new life phase) fit flawlessly with the architecture around her. Making her skin appear as smooth and monochromatic as possible is part of that design choice. And it really makes her eyes "pop," too!

12. Was chess bigger in the past? Yes. If you want to know about the US infatuation with chess, look up the name Bobby Fischer. He was responsible for my love of chess as he wrote chess articles for the magazine "Boy's Life." I cut out all the articles and kept them.

    It's fun to see you so excited about this show. Even if you don't play chess or don't know much about chess, you now better understand those of us who do. I played chess in high school. I was on the chess team. One of my best friends ran the chess club and later became our state chess champion. He was way better than anyone I knew and smart. When I last saw him he was working on a doctorate in physics. Chess for me turned into a love of games of almost every variety. Although I am officially "retired," I run a game shop where I love helping others enjoy games. While we may sell the occasional chess board, it's mostly Dungeons and Dragons or Magic the Gathering now.

15. I think generally chess is no less or more popular than it’s always been – (i.e. typically not something the general population cares too much about). But in the 70s it was front page stuff because of the World Champion games between the American Bobby Fischer and the Soviet-Russian Boris Spassky. It became a metaphor for the Cold War. (And it’s probably what inspired Bjorn and Benny of ABBA to write their musical Chess). I would imagine though that the game got a bump from this series as well.

16. The reason a move or sequence of moves can be discovered by a single player is because there are billions and billions of possible moves and combinations. At least for the foreseeable future, even computers can't find them all (despite being way better than humans at this point). There's still lots of room for inspiration, artistry, and mental games with two humans playing chess…even after hundreds of years. It's effectively bottomless complexity.

19. You may not look at IMDB before you finish a movie or series, but the vast majority of locations were in Berlin Germany. That makes sense, because the former communist area was stuck in the sixties and even part of the west is not as modern as today. Berlin is an enormous city, even larger than Paris.

22. There is something about Anna Taylor-Joy's looks that are way out of average. It is very intriguing. I am fascinated.

    She has those huge anime style eyes. She has that amazing just flawless skin thing going on.

    She is obviously a real human person but there is an aspect of her face that looks like it is AI generated. She looks almost too perfect! Otherworldly.

    Everybody raved about McAvoy in Split and rightfully so, but ATJ kicked butt, too.

29. anytime a Russian goes outside the USSR they would get KGB minders to keep them from getting in trouble but also to keep foreigners away so they can't encourage them to defect. defection was a huge worry for the Soviets.

32. You mentioned that you recognised the actor playing Benny Watts, that you thought he was once a child actor. Personally, I recognise him in his more recent role as Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones, but I suspect you know him, like you said, as a child actor, nearly 20 years ago, in either Love Actually as Sam or Nanny McPhee as Simon.

33. Chess opens the mind as it makes calculate the unexpected. The simplicity of it makes complicated. Everyone should learn it at basic level at least. And true every moves have been played, not in the « same order » though, the opening are established as are the endings. Like life it’s what happens in between that is important that determines the ending.
