  1. And THIS is why I see it as a potentially good thing that Palworld has Sony backing it up. I haven't been keeping track of Sony's business, but considering that I NEVER hear about them in the sea of "Nintendo is doing this, Blizzard is doing that, Ubisoft is doing this" etc etc, I have some faith in them that they won't hurt Palworld. I was explaining to my friend the other night that, as I understood the acquisition, Sony doesn't care about Palworld so much as they care about annoying Nintendo. Pocketpair still has full creative control over their IP and has not received any resources from Sony regarding development. Palworld literally CAN'T stand up to Nintendo by themselves, so Sony stepped in to say "The fact that you made something that is tilting our biggest rival into the sea is HILARIOUS. Keep doing what you're doing boo, I got your back."

TL:DR Sony doesn't want to piggyback off Palworld, they're just looking after them to see how far they can push Nintendo before Sony needs to step in.

Feel free to correct me and fill in the blanks tho, this is just how I interpreted what happened.

EDIT: I just wanna say, I don't think this is Sony doing this out of the goodness of their heart. I'm too jaded for that. It's not about protecting Palworld so much as fighting Nintendo. They are ONLY doing this because Sony as a company has loved screwing with Nintendo since pretty much day 1.

  2. The vibe I've heard is that Japanese software patent rights are NOT expected to be generally enforced (except when they are). This contrasts with US patent rights where we assume the owner WILL generally sue people for infringement.

Now if Sony decides to assist Palworld in this case, there is a potentially strong argument to be made to invalidate Nintendo's patents on the basis of prior art. Mounts in a 3D virtual space (at least broadly speaking) have been a thing decades before Legends Arceus — just ask WoW.

  3. the problem i feel is not that nintendo will go after every company that uses this mechanic just that palworld in particular is a direct threat to their IP yeah there are a lot of Monster hunter taming games out there but palworld was the only one trully getting the spot light due to "Pokemon with guns". and because of how well it was selling and all I believe Nintendo saw that as a direct threat to their franchise and decided to end the competition the best way they know how. but thats what i feel is going on here.

  4. Let me explain some things about patents in games and how this case is not as crazy as it first seems. First off, just about every company that makes anything new they patton it, be it the D-pad or having mini games in loading screens, and Nintendo could have gone after all kinds of monster catching games but they didn't and that's because it would not be worth the risk. Patents are very vague, and that's on perpes, it let's them cover a lot of ground and helps protect the inventions of individuals, but it's a double-edged sword.

if you do pursue a lawsuit using your patents then victory is not as clear cut as it would be for copyright and so if the judge rules in favor of your opponent then you can lose your patents all together.

This lawsuit is clearly an act of desperation, and that's because they know Palworld is a threat, and its all because of the team up with Sony. If palworld gives in, then they will half to change a lot about the game which will eat into development of future content, even if palworld fights, they can't really add any big dlc to the game untill after the case is over , i think that is the real goal of Nintendo. They wish to kill the momentum of palworld before it can take off and if they win the lawsuit all the better.

  5. Nintendo basically telling ALL game companies and indie companies that they have patented Fall damage, catching things, and mounts.

Its so confusing that they are even allowed to do this at all. And its only because its in Japan. Everywhere else they would have been laughed out of court.

  6. This is honestly just really stupid. I can understand defending your franchise from copycats but out of all the monster taming games to pick from WHY PALWORLD!?! I mean Palworld doesn’t even play the same as Pokemon since it’s more like Survival games with Ark mechanics than a RPG. I was honestly expecting them to sue PocketPair for design choices since most Pals look little to similar to Pokémon like with Verdash being the biggest offender cause how closely similar it is to Cinderace as an example. At least THAT would have been more understandable compared to trying to sue them for a mechanic that literally most other games have.

  7. We would have better games if companies stop patenting game mechanics. Pokémon should just went after the copy rights of the few Pokémon that look like and stopped. But Japan does have different laws and if the lawsuit was somewhere else then Nintendo would probably lose. They could just make a better games of capturing monster etc…

  8. 7:24 Of course Pokemon doesn't like competition, they've been putting out such lackluster games ever since they switched to 3D but have been coasting on brand recognition. Palworld isn't perfect but it's proof that an open world monster capturing game can actually exist and that people want it, Nintendo/The Pokemon Company/Game Freak are just somehow incapable of making it themselves for who knows what reason, so they sent lawyers after PocketPair.

  9. I'm with you. I think patenting mounting in virtual reality shouldn't be allowed since it is something that is based on real life action with real world with real creatures. They copied a real action and claimed it as theirs.

I think the patent should be questioned by that logic and become nulled.

The capture thing is pretty specifically a pokemon thing though. I can't really argue that one. But there was an older game called Spectrobes(the Wii version) which had a similar style of creature release and virtual exploration. I loved that game.

  10. I'm Japanese. I agree with you.

But unfortunately, in Japan, most people think that palworld is wrong.

Because their appearance is clearly stolen from Pokemon designs, and the depiction of shooting and eating the Pals is considered disrespectful to Nintendo. Furthermore, the statement of the CEO of Pocketpair regarding the lawsuit is also seen as disrespectful to Nintendo.

I love Palworld and I don't think I've done anything legally wrong, but when I say that, some Nintendo fans treat me as if I'm participating in a crime. YouTubers who post about games (especially influential ones) also show consideration for Nintendo, and not many of them bring up the issues regarding this lawsuit.

There is a trend of turning a blind eye to the influence that Nintendo has on the game industry and just killing Palworld by any means is fine.

Of course, there are people who don't think that way, but social media is full of insults and it's not a situation where we can have a calm discussion. Their loyalty to Nintendo is very strong, and I think that narrows their perspective because of it.

  11. Despite me liking Pokèmon, I am really sad to see Pokèmon bullying other monster franchises to remain on top.

It's okay to protect your IP'S, but bullying other franchises just because they have potential is saddening.

I hope that Pokèmon lose the lawsuit or settle the lawsuit because if Pokèmon wins the lawsuit, we would have to say goodbye to Digimon, Monster Rancher, Yu-Gi-Oh, Neopets, Yo-Kai Watch, Palworld, Bakugan, Monster Hunter, TemTem, Nexomon, Chaotic, Monster Crown, Cassette Beasts, Monster Sanctuary, Moshi Monsters or other monster franchises. No creature franchises will be safe from Pokèmon's reign of terror if Pokémon wins the lawsuit.

  12. At this point, I'm on neither side. The west has proven themselves to not only being toxic, but uninspiring and less creative.

Japan has their own rules aside from ours, and people are forcing them to change the way it works there. Just don't.

  13. If they could get the mechanics ark used way before Nintendo did their patent then with the partnership with Sony might be willing to find a lawsuit against Nintendo as one law requires the Japanese government to shutdown any company abusing illegal patents.

  14. Honestly, Pocket Pair need to attack the patents themself. None of those patents are anything that has not been used in games going back at least to PS2 (ever played Ghosthunters on PS2? Has a similar capture mechanic to the patent).

  15. Palworld better not just roll over for this cause this is Pokemon realizing they keep disappointing people with their games and just trying to eliminate the competition so they are the only option available. It's damn disgusting and I'm tired of these huge companies throwing their weight around thinking they should be the only thing in their genre.

  16. Yeah i was officially done with nintendo after the DS and im going to stay done with nintendo. How are you patenting game mechanics that have already been done in the past and the current day? Im no fan of palworld but this is jgettin ridiculous!

  17. I'm really certain this has nothing to do with Palworld as a whole and everything to do with Sony partnering with Pocketpair. Sony joining forces with Pocketpair gives them access to a IP that people fell in love with to the point of them comparing it to Pokémon but better. Pocketpair would keep Palworld in it's own little bubble pretty much, but with Sony? They could make all kind of things with that.

  18. The “damages” being that they swept a couple of crumbs off the table of Pokemon’s long outstanding, innovatively dry monopoly over the space of monster taming games. Disgusting, really.

  19. This entire situation is beyond stupid, and it shows the greed and lust for power that has become overwhelmingly prevalent in the gaming industry. If Nintendo and the Pokémon Company win this lawsuit not only, is it going cause innovation to stop, it might trigger a mass of lawsuits from each game company and then assuming the entire industry doesn't go under right away it will due to the prices of game to skyrocket from having to pay everyone a fee to use a game mechanic patent. Then at which point people will stop buying new games and possibly games outright and then the entire game industry will go under. Regardless of whether Nintendo and The Pokémon Company win this I am done supporting them because of what they are doing.
