The first movie in the series is not the Pink Panther, it was called "A Shot In The Dark" with Peter Sellars and David Niven"

The one after this one is very funny
So many people today are somewhat disappointed when seeing this movie because they know how hilarious Peter Sellers was as Clouseau in the any sequels. As others have commented, he was supposed to be a minor supporting character in this original. After this, he was the central figure & only then was he allowed to fully create the character.
Thank god you didn't watch the other one, as much as i like Steve Martin his remake of this and Billko are bloody awful

There are so many scenes that are just hilarious. This has always been my favorite!
Charade is a very deft parody of Hitchcock. Superb and very funny. The same people made a follow up called arabesque with Sophia Loren. It’s almost the same movie. I like it a lot. However many really dislike it. Might find it interesting after seeing charade.

Cassie would LOVE Charade, with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. She should also watch the other Psnther movies, since Clouseau KEEPS getting funnier and funnier.

Peter Sellers was an amazing performer. See him in Dr Strangelove, Being There and the Mouse that Roared. His small but relevant part in Lolita is absolutely chilling.
Slapstick is not CHILDISH. It takes great skill to pull off physical comedy. You have to see the next film. A shot in the Dark . Hystetical. Sorry, I have great love for Peter Sellers and this films. He was a genius.
There were 8 of these movies. The second one, called A Shot in The Dark makes Peter Sellars' Clouseau the central character and the rest follow on that. The movie called Inspector Clouseau had Alan Arkin take over the role, then Sellars cam back for the next few movies until he died. The eighth movie was a whole new American officer. Then there was a spin-off in the 90s, and then in the 2000s Steve Martin did his 2 reboot movies. Peter Sellars is certainly the best, and is what people think of mostly. I think you'd really enjoy watching the rest of his performances as Inspector Clouseau.
There were nine Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers, and two more reboot movies with Steve Martin. The second in the series, A Shot in the Dark (1964), is one of the best. Inspector Clouseau is the main character in all but this first one.
The Pink Panther theme and the song "Meglio Stasera" were by Henry Mancini, one of the great composers of movie music. He also wrote the music for Breakfast at Tiffany's (including Moon River), Hatari! (Baby Elephant Walk), Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, and Victor/Victoria, as well as the theme for the TV series Peter Gunn.
Claudia Cardinale didn't speak English, so her lines were dubbed by Gale Garnett, who also had a hit song in 1964 with "We'll Sing in the Sunshine."
French Kiss is a fantastic movie. Kevin Klein is always great… but this a comedy classic.
I mispoke… miswrote,…. a shot in the dark is 1964, and it is the sequel, however all the subsequent movies have "Pink Panther" in the title. Hugo and Charade are the best movies in the list.

Peter Sellers was a top 10 comedy actor of all time. This is still one of my favorite films to watch smile and laugh at
If you're doing Paris you must do Irma La Duce with Jack Lemon and Shirley Maclean. One of the funniest movies ever.
The sequels are much better, I hope you’ll continue watching
Of the movies you listed, Charade is easily the cream of the crop, the superior movie, unfortunately not many have seen it as much as a movie like Ronin. I know the next will be Ronin as it is a top 2, but do yourself a favor, and eventually watch Charade, you will be very happy.
So happy to see you watch the Pink Panther…Funny movie, though a Shot in the Dark is the more Jokes for you Money, and The Pink Panther Strikes again is the one with the best Humor of the Pink Panther Movies, but the Original Pink Panther is the one with the best Story.
Love this one, but there’s SO much wonderful classic French cinema that I hope if you’re on a “Paris” kick you work in some films by great French directors, like Godard or Truffaut, and not just British and American films set in France.

This is the warm up to a fun series of subsequent really fun fun movies. Please watch the next 3 in the series they are the best and don't bother with the Steve Martin remakes. Peter Sellers (Clouseau) is an English actor who loves skewering the French with this bumbling detective. You are a Western Canadian, as am I, and know how important it is to make fun of the French. Sellers also has fun with the Italians in the hilarious "After The Fox" , the greatest thief in Europe where he plays a scheming movie director trying to steal a ton of gold.
David Niven was absolutely magnificent and an incredible man. Also very gracious. He knew and said so that Peter Sellers was the real star of this film. Sellers was quite literally a comic genius. He had the quick wit mixed with a wonderful grasp of physical comedy.
The squeals are incredibly funny
CHARADE has to be next. 😃♥️
I can't stand this movie. It comes down to this, the bumbling but good natured detective tracks down a pair of thieves, successfully catches them, only for his wife of ten years to cheat, frame him for the crimes, and run off with the actual criminals. The movies go on, so we see that neither his wife nor the thieves ever get any comeuppance, and Clouseau never gets any justice for the betrayal.
Skip to the Steve Martin movies, at least he gets the girl in the end.
For context, David Niven was a major Hollywood leading man movie star from before WW2. By 1963 he was 53, but was still meant to be the "headline" star of the movie.
It's funny that the two things that spun into long success from this movie, Inspector Clouseau and the cartoon panther, were just meant to be side gags in the first place.

Great reaction. I don’t know if it is on your list, but if you enjoy comedic movies from that era, I recommend „The Great Race“ (1965) with Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood and Peter Falk 😊.
Hello Cassie – since you are on to Peter Sellers now, you should consider to watch / react to "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb", where he plays three roles at once (and you might be hard pressed to spot them all 😉). It is a Dramedy, but a very funny one, about the (possible) end of the world. And it was filmed just one year after "the pink panther" in 1964.
If you want to see David Niven in a romantic comedy in his younger years, you'll like the movie
Bachelor Mother(1939) with Ginger Rogers.
I watch it every year around Christmas.
It's an oldie but a goodie.
